Hot Spots

Nope, we're not talking about the newest night club!

I've heard about them - what are they?

Hot spots are uncomfortable and itchy. They are red, moist, hot (hence the name) lesions that appear on a dog's head, hips, or chest.  These spots grow as pets lick and chew at them, making them much worse, if not treated properly.

So why do they happen?

Skin irritation is the culprit.  Allergic reactions, flea bits, excessive moisture... they can all trigger hot spots.  Skin infections don't help, either.  If your dog licks and chews at an area - whether due to a skin issue or plain, old boredom - a hot spot could develop.

What do I do for my pet?

Your vet should be consulted to determine the cause.  Once you know what's triggering the issue, there are things you can do to treat the problem.

How can I prevent hot spots?
  • Keeping your dog groomed is a great first start.  Clean coat and dry skin will help prevent hot spots from developing.
  • Keep your pet tangle free.  Mats hold in dirt and debris, not to mention moisture, which can lead to skin irritation.  They're also a hiding place for fleas - and nobody wants that!
  • Make sure your pet is on a flea preventative.
  • Keep the summer blahs away!  A bored dog is a chewing dog.  Provide exercise and play time on a daily, regular basis.
