The Flea Comb
These fine-toothed combs are a great method for finding and removing fleas.  They can also be used to carefully and gently remove debris that collects around the eye.

It's important to remember that if your pet does have fleas, his skin could be irritated from flea bites and from any chewing he may have done to relieve the itching.  Be very careful and gentle to avoid any unnecessary discomfort.

Flea Shampoo
A bath with flea shampoo will kill any fleas that are hitching a ride on your pet.  We use a medicated flea shampoo that also soothes skin irritated from flea bites. This is not the same as a flea "dip" which is used by veterinarians for infestations.  Dips use a strong chemical solution that leaves a residue on the coat for a couple weeks.

Flea Collars
Flea collars are largely ineffective, as they only protect the area where they are worn.  One place where they ARE effective: your vacuum.  Put one in your canister or bag during flea season to kill any fleas you may suck up while vacuuming.

We are happy to provide flea baths for your pet.  If you have indoor cats that are not on a flea preventative, it's extra important to take extra precautions with pets that go outside daily to prevent transmission of these pests.

If you see fleas on your pets, give us a call.  We can provide a soothing bath that will rid your dog or cat of any fleas.  You can also purchase flea combs and shampoo for home use.  Click here for more details.  BONUS!  We can also remove ticks.

Quick and Easy Homemade Dog Toys
Chew Toys

If it seems like you always have a few mismatched socks taking up space on your dryer, here are some easy dog toys you can make with them in just a few minutes.
  • Remove the label, lid, and plastic ring from an empty water bottle.  Tuck it in a sock, tie a knot in the end and VOILA!  An instant crinkle toy that your dog will love.
  • Braid three lonely socks together and knot at both ends.  Chew rope, anyone?
  • Drop a tennis ball into a sock and knot the end.  Fetch!
  • Did you know you can get a bag of squeakers, dirt cheap?  Throw a couple in a sock with a knot in between, tie up the end and we have a dog party!

Pet Owners - It's That Time of Year
I hate to say it, but fleas are once again on the move.  We've seen a significant rise in the number of dogs coming in with fleas in the past two weeks.  It's time to get ready, dig in, and do battle with these pests!  Here are some tips you may find useful:

Treatment

Chemical Control:  There are literally hundreds of products on the market for flea control on pet and premises. For successful flea control, infested pets and the environment need to be treated at the same time. Before application, read and follow the instructions and safety precautions. People and pets should be out of the house when treatments are conducted, and they should not return until the treated surfaces have dried. Depending on the carpet and type of treatment, this may take several hours (3-4 hours will give the insecticide a better chance to work). To assist in drying, open windows and use a fan. Licensed professional pest controllers have the experience, training, and equipment needed to provide the most successful flea control. For your pet-seek treatments through your veterinarian.

Sanitation:  Before vacuuming, collect all items on the floor, under beds, in closets, on furniture, etc. This will allow for best access for treatment. Cover fish tanks, remove bird cages, and put away all pet dishes. You should also clean all pet bedding at this time to maximize your efforts. Vacuuming carpet with a beater-bar type model is best. Concentrate on areas where the pet spends most of its time, such as bedding areas. This will help remove flea larvae by eliminating eggs and effectively open up the carpet's nap to allow for deeper treatment penetration. Flea larvae do not move far from the hatch site when there is an adequate food source, such as died blood feces from adult fleas. Research indicates that larvae spend 83% of the time deep within the base of the carpet where they become entwined in the fibers. At pupation, the larva move up the carpet and spin a cocoon around themselves. When vacuuming, pay special attention to areas where lint and pet hairs accumulate, such as along bedsides, carpet edges, vents, heat registers, floor cracks, and within furniture where your pet sleeps. After vacuuming, take your vacuum outside before removing the bag and/or filter and canister contents. Bag these items and discard them in an outside trash container.

Prevention:  Trim lawns and weeds to create a drier and less attractive environment for flea larvae. Avoid leaving piles of sand and gravel around your home for long periods of time. Fence in your yards to prevent your pet from freely roaming in pest infested areas and also to prevent contact with infested animals. Discourage nesting or roosting of rodents and birds on or near the premises. Screen or seal vents, chimneys, crevices, etc. where rats, mice, squirrels and other vermin may enter your home. Wash or destroy pet bedding, provide regular pet grooming, and vacuum frequently to remove up to 95% of flea eggs, larvae, and adults.

Tips From the Pros
Psst... Want to Know A Secret?

I have a dog who loves, Loves, LOVES to be outside.  All day long.  And she has no idea what shade is for.  She's a cute little dog with ears that flop over like an inside-out umbrella when she's sprinting full out, keeping the yard safe from invading squirrels.  That sensitive skin gets a lot of sun and - despite my vigilant efforts to keep her ears in the "factory reset position" - she has learned what sunburn feels like.

As I chastise myself for being a bad dog parent, I apply this miracle stuff to her sensitive ears.  Skin Works takes the sting out of skin irritation and helps the healing begin.

One of the benefits of working with pets is finding out what works best for them.  Skin Works is a cream that we use to moisturize dry, cracked skin.  We apply it to hot spots for instant relief.  Skin irritation?  No problem.  This stuff handles it all.  Even irritation from flea bites.

Summer's over, you say?  Don't look now, but cold weather will be here soon enough.  This miracle cream even works on foot pads cracked from the ice and snow.

Know what else?  It works on people, too.  Try it the next time you get a little too much sun.  Instant relief.  Wind burn?  Gone.  Groomers know that getting scratched is part of the job.  Applying a little Skin Works to the area reduces redness, relieves the sting, and starts the healing process immediately.

This secret is too good to keep to ourselves.  Ask about it the next time you stop in.

The Back-to-School Blues
The hustle and bustle of back-to-school is an exciting time.  The house may be quiet for the first time all summer as kids pack up and head back to school or college.

Your pet may experience the empty nest, as well.  When their routine changes and their people are gone all day, it can be a difficult transition.  Gone are the days of constant attention and unlimited snuggle time.  Help your pet get used to the changes around her with these great tips:
  • Exercise:  A brisk morning walk will help burn off some of that anxious energy and can prevent "acting out" behaviors, such as chewing and barking.
  • Don't make a big deal of good-byes:  getting emotional will upset your pet.  A quick goodbye and a toy to distract them is a good way to relieve separation anxiety before it starts.
  • A calm hello:  likewise, don't act like you've been gone a year when you return.  If you act like it's been forever since you've seen each other, it makes it easier for them to be anxious when you leave.
  • Exercise, Part 2: You've had a long day.  Nothing sounds better than collapsing on the couch, right?  Don't forget your obligation to your pet - he likely has lots of unspent energy that needs an outlet.
  • Build a routine: the sooner you form a new routine, the sooner your dog will relax.

Remember - when you're gone, you have endless activities that consume your attention: driving, helping people, doing paperwork, etc.  Your dog doesn't.  Make sure to include your pets in your daily plans to make sure that everyone - including your furry family - can have a good day.
