Help! My Pet Has Fleas!

Fleas are an extreme annoyance to pet owners and to their pets. If you've got a dog, chances are at some point it is going to get fleas. The presence of just a few fleas can cause an intense allergic reaction, characterized by severe itching and hair loss above the tail.

An adult flea mates shortly after emerging from the pupae and begins laying eggs within 36 hours. The female lays eggs in the host animal, but the eggs fall to the ground, carpet, sofa, dog bed, owner's bed, or easy chair where they hatch within 2-5 days. In her brief life span, a single female flea can lay more than 2,000 eggs. Female fleas need blood to complete their reproductive cycle and baby
fleas need blood to grow.

Fleas can be very hard to detect, so look for flea "signs" instead of the
fleas themselves. Flea dirt looks like sprinkled pepper on the dog. If you drop some of this "pepper"
onto a damp paper towel and the towel turns a reddish color, you can be assured it's flea stool.

If we see fleas on your pet, we'll proceed with a flea bath to eliminate any "passengers" he may be carry - and we'll give you a call right away so you can take steps at home to get rid of these pests in your dog's environment.

The Andis Deshedding Tool

We started using this deshedding tool in the school a few weeks ago and immediately fell in love with it.  It's light, sturdy, and effective.  If you have pets with loads of undercoat, this is what you've been waiting for.  It reduces shedding up to 90% without damaging the coat or scratching the skin.  What's more, it saves time and effort - your tired arms will thank you for it!

Pick one up the next time you drop in for a visit.  You'll be glad you did!

Are You Holding Your Shears Correctly?

Does your scissor work look like crushed velvet?  Do you enjoy the process of hand scissoring the coat of a pet? Can you get plush finish in a short amount of time? Or do you whittle away the coat way S-L-O-W-L-Y?

Flawless hand-scissoring is almost becoming a lost art.

If your hand-scissoring skills could use some help - here are a few tips:

Simply improving how you HOLD the shears can have a huge impact on your end product. Master these few tips, and you are on your way to a velvet finish on the Poodle coat!  As you work your shears, only your thumb should move. Open and close the shear blade while the rest of your hand remains motionless. The scissor should stay balanced in your hand, at right angles to your index finger. Keep it steady and flush...

Quick and Easy Homemade Dog Toys
The Crackling Sock

You will need:

  • 1 small, empty plastic bottle
  • 1 sock

Directions

Take the cap, plastic ring, and label off of your plastic bottle and throw them away (they're a choking hazard).  Squeeze all of the air out. Put this inside of an old sock and tie a knot in the end of the sock to keep it in place. The sound of the crackling plastic, and the texture, will be something your pup will love.

Cat Grooming
Cats are great friends and companions.

...and they're
really good at shedding!

If your cat is leaving a trail of hair everywhere she goes, bring her in for a bath and brush out.  Removing excess coat will help her look her best, remove any matting she may have, and cut back on the hairballs!

We love cats - and you're going to love how your cat looks and feels after getting pampered at Paragon!
