Back to School
Everybody Out of the Pool!
You may want to send the kids out of the room for a minute. Are they gone? It's time to talk about... going back to school! (We'll wait a minute for the horrified shrieks of your kids to stop.) With many schools starting earlier this year, we thought it would be a good time to talk about what this means for your pets. After a summer of long days spent at home with our furry friends, it may be confusing to them when it comes to sudden changes in their routine. They get used to the constant companionship of their human litter mates and when the kids get on the bus and are gone all day, Roscoe and Fido may not be sure what to make of it. Pets love structure and routine. Changes in daily life can trigger changes in their behavior. Be aware that your fuzzy kids may get the blues and feel separation anxiety. How can you help? Make sure they have interactive toys for when they're alone. Make sure they get plenty of vigorous exercise to work off nervous energy. You can even start making gradual adjustments to their routine in these weeks before school starts. Treating your pet to a "spa day" at Paragon might be just what you and your pet need. Coordinate a grooming appointment into your busy work week and Benji can get pampered by our loving students.

Crate Time
Crate Greatness
Do you know if your pet is right or left handed? Dogs and cats can have a dominant side, just like us. If they'll be spending more time than usual in their crates due to changes in your household schedules, they may be inclined to favor one side more so than the other while relaxing. This could mean that longer haired pets can develop matting on one side. Keep that brush handy and don't forget to comb so you can make sure you've removed all the tangles.
BONUS TIP! If your pet wears a harness all the time, you may want to remove it regularly and brush these areas thoroughly. Mats will form in high friction areas such as under the arms, as well as beneath the collar and harness.

Frozen Fun!
Keeping it cool!
The next time your dog wants a cool treat, try stuffing ice cubes into his Kong toy! He'll love chasing it around the yard for those refreshing bites! It can be a little messy, so it's perfect as an outside activity.

DID YOU KNOW...
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the smallest dog on record was a Yorkshire Terrier in Great Britain who, at the age of 2, weighed just 4 ounces.
The only sweat glands a dog has are between the paw pads.
Greyhounds are the fastest breed. They're able to run at up to 45 miles per hour. The average dog runs 19 miles per hour.
It costs approximately $10,000 to train a federally certified search and rescue dog.
Male dogs will raise their legs while urinating to aim higher on a tree or lamppost because they want to leave a message that they are tall and intimidating.
