Should I or Shouldn't I?
The pros and cons of "shaving down" your dog
Summer is near and the heat is on. You may be wondering if you should get your dog cut really short for the warmer months (okay, it's Michigan - warmer month). While we will provide this service if you choose, here are some tips to consider before you go short: - Some breeds, like those from the Sporting, Terrier, and Working dog groups have harsh guard hairs that are commonly destroyed by clipper cutting. In many cases, once the coat is trimmed, the harsh texture and color can be lost.
- For double coated breeds, the coat can grow in even thicker following a full shave off.
- If your dog was bred to perform active duties, shaving him down can lead to some health issues like sunburn, insect bites, and minor injuries caused by running through underbrush or woods.
- Single coated dogs that are indoors most of the time are great candidates for this style. It's a great low-maintenance trim alternative.

Soothing Your Pet's Skin

Is your dog prone to hot spots? Does he have dry or itchy skin? Maybe she is suffering from flea bites and needs some relief?
Help is on the way!
We recommend Micro-Tek shampoo to help speed up the healing process and soothe skin. If you would like to try it on your pet, just ask. We'll be happy to talk to you about the possible benefits for your pet.

What Was That?
Caring for your dog's ears
Cleaning you pet's ears is a standard pre-groom procedure for all professional pet groomers and stylists. A healthy ear will look clean with shiny pink skin in the canal area.
Healthy ears do not emit unpleasant odors and have very little dirt or debris trapped in the ear canal. Dogs with dropped or folded ears are more prone to issues than those with pricked ears. Moisture can get trapped under the flap of ear leather and become a breeding ground for bacteria.
What to do? If the inside of the ear leather is heavily coated, your groomer can remove some of the coat with clippers. This will provide better air circulation. Golden Retrievers are perfect candidates for this spa treatment!
BONUS TIP! if only one ear of your pet is matted and the other is not, be suspicious of a problem in the tangled ear.

How do I enroll?
After an initial interview, we'll need your completed application and a score of 80% on your entrance exam.

Frozen Pet Treats
Keeping it cool!
If you're warm this summer, your pet may be, too. Here are some cool ways to help your pet chill out this summer:
- Fill some ice cubes trays with low sodium chicken or beef broth. You may want to buy some of a different color just for pet treats so you don't accidentally get a broth cube in your lemonade!
- Make little meatballs of his favorite soft food, place them on cupcake cups, and tuck them in the freezer. The next time she's panting, give her a cool treat!
- Mix plain, low-fat yogurt with peanut butter and bananas. Scoop it into ice cubes trays and serve when he needs a little refreshment.

DID YOU KNOW...
...dogs have been used to help children who have reading difficulties? The dogs are trained to sit or lie down for extended periods, allowing the child to read to it. This has been helpful for children who struggle or fall behind with their reading skills.
