Spring is Finally Here!

Let the Shedding Begin!
Working Out With Your Vacuum

Smiling Shaggy It's that time of year - our pets are losing their winter coats to make way for their lighter spring coats.  The evidence is all over your floor.  Although you can burn at least 59 calories in 15 minutes of vacuuming, I'm sure you would rather not have to spend so much time with your upright.

Regular brushing is a great way to help control  shedding.  With so many styles available, it may be confusing to know which brush is best for your dog.  We can help you decide which brush will help remove the most loose hair for your particular breed.  Regular grooming will also go a long way to controlling shedding.  Let us help!

Freshening Up
Winter Bedding

Another place stray hair loves to hide is in your pet's bedding.  It's like a hair magnet!  With warmer weather on the way,  you may also wish to switch away from the warmer fleece bedding in favor of something cooler.

Freshening Up, Part 2
It's All About Dental Health

Ever wonder how to keep your pet's breath fresh?  Proper dental health is the answer!  Regular cleaning of your pet's teeth will remove plaque and tartar, just like it does for us.  We can brush your dog's teeth at his next grooming appointment, or anytime in between.  We'll keep your toothbrush on file so you never have to worry about losing it or forgetting to bring it with you.  It just takes a few minutes and it's great for maintaining proper dental hygiene.

Proper Nail Care
A Mani-Pedi for Your Pet

As you get back outside to enjoy evening or morning walks, you may notice that you can hear your dog's nails clicking on the pavement.  Maintaining proper nail length is not just a fashion statement, it's important for the health of your pet.  Nails naturally grow with a downward curve.  Left unattended, these nails may grow long enough to weaken the tendon and bone structure of the foot.  Over time, the continued striking of long nails on the ground puts excessive pressure on the structure of the foot, causing pain.  On larger dogs, the nails may break off, exposing the sensitive quick.  Smaller dogs can experience the nails curving around into the pad of the foot.

If you aren't comfortable trimming your pet's nails, we can help.   We recommend coming in every four to six weeks to keep those nails nice and short.  You are welcome to drop by for this walk-in service any time between 9-11:30 and 1:30-5:00.

Frozen Pup Treats
Back By Pupular Demand

32 oz. plain yogurt

1 mashed ripe banana

2 tablespoons peanut butter

2 tablespoons honey

Mix all of the ingredients with a blender or mixer and freeze in ice cube trays.  Small paper cups and disposable egg cartons also make good molds. When frozen, microwave for a few seconds, unmold, and place the treats in a plastic bag and store in the freezer. (Note: if using Styrofoam egg cartons or cups, rest the containers briefly in a partially filled pan of warm water to loosen contents. Unless the Styrofoam is labeled as microwave safe, it could melt.) If you want to be fancy, bone and paw shaped molds are available.

Grooming Tip of the Month
Spring Cleaning

It's time to air out the house and tackle those spring cleaning projects.  Before you get started, remember that many household cleaning products are toxic to your pet.  A good general rule of thumb is to pet proof your house the same way you would for a small child.  Keep poisons out of reach and be sure to read the labels for proper use.

Why not schedule your grooming appointment to coincide with a big cleaning day?  While your dog or cat is with us for a spa day, you can use the time to deep clean without a pet underfoot!
