Grooming Tip of the Month
 | | Older dogs may start to get a little gray on the muzzle and around the eyes. |
September is Senior Pet Health Month.
Each pet ages differently according to breed and lifestyle. Age related problems may begin at age seven for most small to medium sized dogs and 5 years for large and giant breed dogs. What does this mean for your pet? If you have an older dog, grooming may become more tiresome, as the process requires them to stand for longer periods. Even with frequent breaks to rest, your pet may feel fatigue or discomfort. Joint sensitivity due to arthritis can also become painful. Some pets may even find brushing something to be tolerated, rather than enjoyable. As we work with your pet, we may be able to notice a decline in his condition. If we notice anything that causes us to be concerned for your dog's health, we'll let you know right away so that you can take action. There may come a time when your beloved friend would benefit from grooming in a veterinary setting. They can make your pet more comfortable and will be present should a medical emergency arise. Changes to Your Pet as He Ages
- As with people, older dogs may start to show gray hair - most commonly on the muzzle and around the eyes.
- Nails may become brittle. They may need to be clipped more often, since older inactive dogs are less likely to wear their nails down through activity.
- Routine dental care including tooth brushing, can help keep dental disease to a minimum.
