Director's Dialogue

It's hard to believe yet another year has come and gone, but as they say - "time flies." This past year we were able to celebrate many successes, many of which improved travel from our local airports.

Business travelers were happy to hear that FWA joined the ranks of airports nationwide by equipping a scanner that accepts mobile boarding passes for all Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and Allegiant flights. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) may now scan an e-boarding pass from a cell phone or tablet via text message, e-mail, or an airline's mobile app, allowing passengers to navigate through the airport and onto their flight with only an electronic device in hand.

In the summer of 2013, the Airport Authority teamed up with the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership to garner travel information from companies that fly frequently. The Business Travel Survey was used to collect responses from 353 area residents and revealed that an eastbound destination was the top-requested among respondents. Lucky for those travelers, the Airport Authority was also awarded a $600,000 grant following the survey to pursue an eastbound hub destination. In 2014, the Authority will continue negotiations with all airlines, new and incumbent, to enhance air service options from the Fort Wayne region for both business and leisure passengers.

Speaking of enhancements, next on the success list is Allegiant's addition of a new flight to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA), which began in October 2013. The flight operates on Wednesdays and Saturdays using 156-seat Airbus A319 aircraft. Phoenix/Mesa joins four other vacation destinations offered by Allegiant from FWA - Ft. Myers/Punta Gorda, Orlando/Sanford, Tampa/St. Pete, and seasonal summer service to Myrtle Beach.

I am excited to see what 2014 will bring us. We continue to keep busy with new events and projects, and we look forward to sharing with you many other airport happenings in this edition of our e-newsletter and in the coming year!

Thanks and enjoy.

Now fly non-stop to Phoenix on Allegiant!
On October 30, FWA welcomed Allegiant as they started their non-stop service from FWA to Phoenix-Mesa. Passengers on the inaugural flight were treated to a small celebration in the terminal that included some food, cake, a photo booth, and goody bags for every passenger. Mayor Henry and the County Commissioners also came out for a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new route. Photos from the event can be found on the FWA Facebook Page.
The service to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) now operates two flights per week on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Flights can be booked for travel all the way through August 12, 2014 online at www.allegiant.com or by calling 702-505-8888.
One more daily flight added to Chicago

Just last week, SkyWest Airlines announced that it will begin operating an additional roundtrip flight from FWA to Chicago O'Hare (ORD) beginning April 1, 2014. With this new mid-day option, FWA passengers will have their choice of four, daily roundtrip flights to access United's global network through Chicago. All four of the daily flights to Chicago have been timed to provide optimum connection opportunities. This means they're perfect for those planning a short business trip or the traveler who wants to fly to Europe, Asia or around North America. Flights are available for booking immediately at united.com or by calling 1-800-241-6522.

Airport Authority wins grant for air service development

In October, the Small Community Air Service Development Program (SCASDP) awarded a $600,000 grant to the Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority to help attract a new flight to Fort Wayne International Airport. SCASDP is a grant program under the Office of Aviation Analysis. It is designed to help small communities address air service and airfare issues. Only 25 airports across 22 states were awarded grants under the SCASDP program. The grants total more than $11 million toward the implementation of air service initiatives. The Airport Authority will be working with an air service consultant in 2014 to meet with airlines and work toward gaining air service to the Northeast.

Airport News

Smith Field welcomes new tenant
At the end of October, Haverfield Aviation Inc. moved into two buildings at Smith Field Airport (SMD).

Haverfield Aviation Inc. is headquartered in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where it is the leading provider of aerial power line inspection and construction support services both in the United States and abroad. Haverfield's powerline pilots, aerial linemen and aircraft mechanics live and work across the country, and it is expected that the Fort Wayne regional operations is likely to attract these specially trained and skilled workers to Northeast Indiana, just as many relocate to live near the Gettysburg office in Pennsylvania.

Haverfield has signed two leases for five years. As part of the lease agreements, Haverfield will update and remodel the interior of Building, which is the former SMD terminal building. To learn more about Haverfield and see some cool videos of what they do, visit their website at www.haverfield.com.

Republic Parking begins operations at FWA
The Airport Authority welcomed Republic Parking to FWA in October. The Chattanooga, TN based company is one of the largest privately held providers of parking management services in the United States. The company holds parking contracts with over 65 airports worldwide.

The Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority entered into a three-year agreement with Republic, with two one-year extension options. Parking rates for short term, long term, and economy lots at FWA have not changed as a result of the new operator, and passengers have not experienced any changes in the operations.

Airport Events & RecognitionAirportEvents
FWA celebrates airline anniversaries, holds Customer Appreciation Week

This year marked three noteworthy anniversaries for the legacy air carriers at Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA). United Airlines celebrated 65 years of service in Fort Wayne, Delta Air Lines 60 years, and American Airlines 40 years. To celebrate, the Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority hosted a Customer Appreciation Week November 11-15 to thank the airlines for their service and the community for their support.

Each day during Customer Appreciation Week, Airport Authority staff offered special gifts and services to passengers in the terminal. Some of these included complimentary ice cream bars, DeBrand Chocolates, and popcorn, as well as free 10-minute chair massages. For those passengers who were not traveling through FWA that week, the Airport Authority hosted an online giveaway for prizes including $250 travel certificates from each airline, Vera Bradley travel totes, DeBrand Chocolates, and other airport goodies.

Santa comes to Smith Field in helicopter for Toys for Tots drive

For the second year, the Airport Authority hosted "Santa's Landing" at Smith Field Airport. Instead of bringing the sleigh, Santa and his elves arrived in their North Pole helicopter. After Santa's arrival, each child had the opportunity to tell him their Christmas wishes, take a photo with him, and enjoy some refreshments in the Sweet Aviation Maintenance hangar at Smith Field.  Admission to this event was a toy donation for Toys for Tots, and over 50 toys were collected at the event.

To view a collection of photos from the event, check out the airport Facebook Page.
