Director's Dialogue
With Labor Day behind us and school back in session, it feels like summer is officially over. With the numerous events and projects that kept us so busy this summer, we are looking forward to new projects and events this fall.
In September, we will host the Regional Air Service Breakfast at Hangar 39 right here at FWA. This year we welcome Jeffrey Hartz of Mead & Hunt Air Service Consulting to talk about current air service challenges. This event is open to the public and we encourage you to learn about how current trends are affecting FWA. More details about this event are included in the newsletter below.
These days in the airline industry, there isn't a whole lot of expansion taking place, and we at FWA have been fortunate enough to maintain the service we already have. This fall we will have the pleasure of welcoming a new nonstop route from Fort Wayne International Airport to Phoenix/Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) via Allegiant at the end of October. Beginning October 30, Allegiant will begin twice weekly service on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Allegiant has been great at meeting the traveling needs of Northeast Indiana and we look forward to offering this new destination from Fort Wayne to the Southwest.
This fall will begin another airport development project that might not be visible to the everyday passenger. The West Access Road Development project will build a new access road to the west side of the airport and create an area for future business development, new hangars, and general aviation facilities. Currently, there is no easy access to this side of the airport, and as part of our Airport Master Plan, the Airport Authority has plans to move the general aviation operations to this area of the airport property. The work on this project should begin mid-September and will be completed in early Summer 2014 after taking a break for the cold winter months.
Even as the seasons change, we still keep busy with new events and projects. We look forward to sharing with you many other airport happenings in this edition of our e-newsletter.
Thanks and enjoy.

Air Service Update
Now fly non-stop to Phoenix on Allegiant!
The Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority and Mayor Tom Henry announced on August 20th that Allegiant will once again offer non-stop service from Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA) to Phoenix/Mesa Arizona. The service to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) will operate two flights per week on Wednesdays and Saturdays beginning October 30, 2013. Flights can be booked for travel all the way through April 2014 online at www.allegiant.com or by calling 702-505-8888.
Mobile boarding passes rolling out at FWA
The Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority is pleased to announce that Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA) is now equipped to accept mobile boarding passes for two of its air carriers - Delta and Allegiant. The TSA checkpoint now has devices capable of scanning an e-boarding pass from a cell phone or tablet via text message, e-mail, or an airline's mobile app, allowing passengers to navigate through the airport and onto their flight with only an electronic device in hand. Implementation is still underway for American and United e-boarding passes.
When entering the security checkpoint, the e-pass should be displayed on a mobile device, ready to be scanned, just like a paper pass. Passengers will need to present a government-issued photo ID along with their boarding pass. An ID is not required for those under 18 years of age. Passengers will need to show their e-pass again at the gate before boarding the plane.
One more daily flight added to Detroit
Delta added a 5th daily Detroit trip in mid-June and it will continue through the end of the year. Right now, we are anticipating four daily flights in January and February, then the five flights will resume again in March. To book a flight on Delta visit www.Delta.com or call 1-800-221-1212.
Join us for the Regional Air Service Breakfast
The airline industry is constantly changing. Fort Wayne International Airport is dedicated to keeping abreast of those changes and how they affect Fort Wayne's travelers. This year, the airport welcomes guest speaker Jeffrey Hartz of Mead & Hunt Air Service Consulting to share current industry trends and their impact on FWA. Hartz has hands-on experience in all facets of air service development, including airline planning, market analysis, forecasting, financial planning and analysis, scheduling, pricing, and revenue management. Hartz' background includes strategic planning, scheduling, and marketing at American Airlines/American Eagle Airlines, Big Sky Airlines, and Mesa Air Group.
The event will be on September 12 from 7:30AM - 9:00AM at Fort Wayne International Airport - Hangar 39. Cost is $10 for Chamber members, $15 for non-members, and that includes a buffet breakfast. To register online and for a parking map, visit the Chamber website.

Airport News

FAA finds zero discrepancies on recent inspection
Officials at the Airport Authority are pleased to announce the successful completion of the annual Part 139 Airport Certification Inspection, which took place on March 26th and 27th. Part 139 is a regulation that the FAA mandates for all certificated airports to maintain standards so they can maintain their operating certificate. The Part 139 inspection is completed every year by FAA inspectors who review numerous areas of airport operations like airfield safety, employee trainings, etc.
The significance of no discrepancies means FWA is in compliance in all areas and received no citations. This is not easy to maintain because of the level of detail of the inspected areas. The Airport Authority maintenance, operations, and public safety departments do a great job throughout the year maintaining the grass, lights, signage, markings, wildlife management, safety vehicles, etc. Without their hard work, we wouldn't have received this great inspection!
Airport Authority staff participate in United Way Day of Caring
On August 1, members of the Airport Authority staff participated in the United Way Day of Caring. The group painted a large portion of the offices of the Wellspring Interfaith Center in downtown Fort Wayne. It was a great way to bond as a group and give back to the local community. We look forward to the Day of Caring next year!
New television ads for FWA
Throughout April and May, new TV ads for FWA began airing on local TV stations. The new campaign highlights things in life that are hard, then contrasts it with how easy it is to fly out of Fort Wayne International Airport. The TV spots will air again in the fall, but they can be seen online at this link. There are two different spots on the link and they can be viewed by clicking on each picture once you open the link. Let us know what you think!

FWA terminal upgrades completed

The construction upgrades that began earlier this year at Fort Wayne International Airport are officially complete. The terminal, which was last updated in 1994, now has a more modern look.
Travelers heading through FWA will now see new paint, some new flight information displays, updates to the columns, and improvements to the kid's play area. There was also some light renovation to expand the Welcome Center and the Business Center near the upstairs gates. In both of these areas there is new furniture and workstations. The renovations have created a more functional space for both business and family travelers alike. Check it out the next time you are here and let us know your thoughts! Click here to see more photos.
Smith Field terminal building move completed
Visitors heading out to Smith Field will now find the new terminal building open at 902 W Ludwig Road. Ivy Tech outgrew this building which was used for their Airframe & Powerplant program, so they built a new facility at Smith Field off of Cook Road. With the old building vacant, it was a natural fit for the new terminal building. Upgrades have been made to the building like new lighting, paint, furnishings, and offices. A completely new fuel farm was put in as well. A ribbon cutting and open house ceremony was held on June 17. Check out pictures from this event on our Facebook page.

Airport holds first ever "Dodge High Fares" Dodgeball Tournament
On July 14, 23 teams showed up at the SportONE Fieldhouse to dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge in the first ever Allegiant "Dodge High Fares" dodgeball tournament. This event was the first of its kind in Fort Wayne, and was brought to our community by Allegiant, Fort Wayne International Airport, SportONE Fieldhouse and the Three Rivers Festival.
In addition to a prize pack that included a night out at Parkview Field for a Tincaps game, the first place team got to award the "Dodge High Fares" event proceeds to one of eight selected charity partners. The first place team, "The Really Really Big Show," awarded the $1500 event proceeds to the second place team, Community Harvest "Hunger Hitters." "The Really Really Big Show" took home the first place trophy after beating the "Hunger Hitters" in 3 of 5 championship games.
The president of the National Dodgeball League, Ed Prentiss, was also present at this event, which was a special treat. Ed helped train the referees, taught players the rules, assisted with the bracket updating, and officiated the final rounds of play. He was VERY impressed by the turnout for the event and the level of play in Fort Wayne, and he hopes to come back for another tournament in Fort Wayne someday!
Overall, the event was a great success and we hope to have a similar event again in the future. To see more event photos, click here.

Aviation Scholarships awarded to local high school students

Each year the Greater Fort Wayne Aviation Museum awards scholarships to high school seniors pursuing degrees in aviation-related careers. The scholarships are open to students in Allen and the surrounding northeast Indiana counties. After an overwhelming response, the scholarship committee narrowed their choice down to three outstanding individuals. Tyler Housholder, Jason Ivanovic, and Chandler Nan were the recipients of the 2013 Jim Kelley Memorial Scholarship.
Tyler was accepted into Purdue's Aviation Management Program and will begin his studies there this fall. Jason will also be attending Purdue University to major in aerospace engineering. Chandler will be attending the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs to begin her training as a military flight surgeon. The Airport Authority staff and Aviation Museum congratulate these individuals on their outstanding accomplishments and wish them the best of luck in their future careers.
