State Sales Tax Impact on Aviation Fuel Prices
Beginning July 1, 2013 (HEA 1545, Sec 67), sales of aviation and jet fuel are subject to an aviation fuel excise tax of 10 cents per gallon. Also effective July 1, 2013, aviation and jet fuel are exempt from the 7 percent Indiana gross retail (sales) tax.
We at Smith Field have updated our fuel prices to reflect the new tax regulations and we have posted the requirements on the bulletin board in the terminal. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the new tax regulations on aviation and jet fuel please contact me.

Smith Field in the News
Smith Field to Unveiled New Terminal June 12th 2013
A grand opening was held Monday for a new terminal building at Fort Wayne's Smith Field Airport.
Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority officials said the new terminal was created through a roughly $500,000 renovation of a former Ivy Tech Community College building.
Officials said the new terminal at the general-aviation airport features a convenient customer service counter, a multipurpose room for meetings and training seminars, new office space, 24-hour restrooms, a patio area and a new fuel farm for aircraft.
The old terminal is still at the Ludwig Road airport, officials said, and is being used for events.
"The old terminal building was 35 years old and lacked the space needed to sufficiently serve our customers and business partners," Scott Hinderman, executive director of airports for the authority, said in a statement. "Now, we have plenty of space for our staff and pilots and also room to grow, which is exactly what we see general aviation doing in Fort Wayne."
Smith Field Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Smith Field Airport unveiled its new terminal building Monday afternoon with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The terminal building is the former Ivy Tech Community College building located at 902 W. Ludwig Road. It features a customer service counter, multipurpose meeting and training room, new office space, and a new aircraft fueling area.
Airport officials said the new facility will not only benefit their regular customers, but it'll also be convenient for the nearby Ivy Tech aviation maintenance students.
"This facility now gives us that ability to have more classrooms where more people if they want to become a flight student or learn how to fly. More people can go through the program at any one time," Scott Hinderman, of Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority, said.
Over the past five years, crews have also rehabilitated Smith Field's runway and installed a new 12-unit T-hangar facility |
I have received a lot of questions regarding the status of the E Row electrical repairs and estimated completion time. Currently we have one electrician and his assistant working diligently on the repairs to this facility. All next week we will have 2 electricians assigned and we hope to begin moving our E Row tenants back in to their hangars between Monday July 15th and Friday July 19th. If anything changes with our anticipated move in dates I will notify all E Row tenants of the change. At this point new conduit has been run for half of the facility.
This upgrade will provide much better lighting in the hangars as well as electrical receptacles. We have also added a light on the two outside walls of the facility. |
Improvements to Grass Taxiway
If you've been flying at Smith Field lately you may have noticed that our H and I row hangars now have a dedicated taxilane to the approach of runway 23. Our maintenance supervisor took time to come to SMD and layout the taxilane so that our pilots had a dedicated area to taxi to and from the runway. |
