Jacob Kemp

CineMoms got to speak with one of the show's stars, Jacob Kemp, who plays educated newsie, Davey.  Jacob hails from Boston where he got his start at the Wheelock Family Theater, and spent years performing with many of the city's acclaimed theatre companies.  He is now best known for his role as Kris in the popular TV show, Black-ish.

Tell us about your role of Davey in NEWSIES:

Davey is an ideas man - it is his heart and his convictions, his education and his leadership that spark the idea to form a Newsboy's union. And it's thanks to him that the union continues to stay on course and fight for their goals when the rest of the union loses hope. He is a complete pleasure to play each night onstage in Newsies.

What is your favorite NEWSIES number that you perform in?

My favorite number in the show is "Once And For All." It's the rousing 11-o'clock number towards the end of the second act, when the leaders of the Newsboy's Union have decided to print their own newspaper. It's a full ensemble number, packed with intricate harmonies and beautiful lyrics.

Tell us about playing Kris in Black-ish?

It's strange to imagine that, at this time last year, the pilot episode of Black-ish hadn't even been shot. Casting had not even begun, the script not yet cleared for production. And now America has fallen in love with the Johnsons, with Kris,

with the team at Stevens and Lido. It's so thrilling when a project you have worked so hard to create becomes championed by its audience. And with each episode, my character, Kris - Andre's screwball personal assistant, continues to grow and evolve with the show.
