 Family Concert!

Every Halloween the "phantoms of the orchestra" return to haunt the concert hall. The maestro and his terrified assistant must use the power of the baton to control this ghoulish orchestra of the undead and lead them in concert. Two performances will take place at 1:30pm and 3:30pm.

Behind The Music!

As CineMoms kicks off promotions for two great Atlanta Symphony Orchestra shows this month, we thought we would go "behind the music" and learn more about the ASO from someone who knows first hand what its like to be part of such an amazing organization.  We took our questions to orchestra member, Yang-Yoon Kim, who has been a violist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) since 2009.

This award-winning musician began her musical training at age five. The first instrument she played was the piano, but she always had a desire to play a string instrument. At age 10, she finally got her wish and picked up a viola for the first time. The rest is history!

We asked Yang-Yoon Kim to tell us more about the two upcoming ASO concerts:The Movie Music Spectacular on October 25 and 26 and Phantoms of the Orchestra, the family concert on Sunday, October 27.

We can't wait for this month's Movie Music Spectacular!  Why is music such an important part of movies?

Movie music does more than set the mood of the scene. It allows the director to control the audience's emotions making the movie experience all that more powerful.

What are some of your favorite movie songs?

There is so much great music in movies! One musical soundtrack that comes to mind is from the movie "Schindler's List." The music particularly stands out to me because of the powerful story that is enhanced by John Williams' composition and Itzhak Perlman's performance.

Do you enjoy the ASO performances where you get to play different types of music besides classical?

I was trained to play classical music, so I love the challenges of playing music of a different genre because it gives me a broader perspective on music. At the ASO, we offer a variety of different types of music of every genre for our audiences. It's always fun performing at our POPS! Concerts because we're often reaching different audiences than we do through our classical concerts. For some of these guests, it may be the first time they've ever experienced the Atlanta Symphony.

The Family Concerts at the ASO are always very popular. What does the ASO do to keep kids interested during the family shows?

Our Family Concerts are a great way to introduce kids to classical music. The concerts are short, the music we play is very fun and accessible, and there's always something exciting happening on stage - whether it's singing, dancing, acting, or something else! Our Halloween Concert is always one of our most popular Family Concerts of the year. Audience members are encouraged to come in costume, and even the orchestra has a costume contest and the audience votes for their favorite person! This year, the Magic Circle Mime Company will join us for "The Phantoms of the Orchestra." It's a fun story - set to popular classical music - about how phantoms take over Symphony Hall, and the conductor must use the power of his baton to take control of the concert! This year's performance will definitely be a concert the whole family will enjoy.

What advice do you have for parents who would like their children to learn to play an instrument or just learn more about classical music?

Learning a new instrument can be very challenging and I think parents must always remind themselves of this. In my opinion, the most important thing for children is to maintain a rewarding and fun environment. This begins with the choice of instrument. I feel that it is important that a child chooses the instrument or at least plays a role in the selection. Practice is also a key part of maintaining a child's sense of enjoyment. By practicing, a child is able to continually improve and progress.

What is it like to be part of the ASO?

Backstage, we seem like very normal colleagues. But when the music starts on the stage, though, things change drastically. We start to breathe together, we click, we emotionally connect to each other. All of us have to act as one.
