Mother Nature is the best designer and teacher. For centuries, architects, engineers and master builders have found inspiration in nature's designs.
Consider the shape of a tree for example. It is so natural, logical and yet so beautiful. A careful look at its structure provides important lessons on how to design efficient structures. The tree trunk is larger at the base than at higher elevations. The branches are thinner as they get further away. A tree is, in effect, a vertical cantilever, which is supported only at one end, by its roots. Similarly, branches are smaller scale cantilevers, supported only at the connection to the trunk or to larger branches. In a cantilever, the stresses are highest at the support points and decrease along the span towards the tip, which is exactly the same in trees.
Collaboration between architects, engineers and builders can only result in better buildings, both architecturally and structurally. Beauty of form and efficiency of structure can then be achieved simultaneously.
The Center Bar at the Hard Rock Casino, featured below, is an excellent example in which these concepts and ideas were applied in the design and construction of this interesting project.

| Ameba-Shaped Tube Steel Tree Structure |
PROJECT SUMMARY:
THOMAD Engineering provided structural engineering and design services to help the team deliver this interesting project on a record construction time of about 10 weeks!
Major components include:
- Ameba-shaped tube steel tree structure that supports LED lights to form a new fixture and focal point. The LED lights stream a feast of colors and shapes that match the music videos playing on the surrounding high-definition TVs.
- Honey Comb Trellis and cantilevered wall structures.
- Framed raised floor, access floor system and floor infill.
PROJECT TEAM:
- Architect of Record: Friedmutter Group
- Contractor: Martin Harris Construction
