How Does Your Garden Grow?
July, 2014

Contrary to the old English nursery rhyme, "Mary, Mary Quite Contrary" the community gardens of Housing Resources Board are growing much more than "silver bells, cockle shells and pretty maids all in a row."

We love that our gardens  create
opportunities for  community engagement.

Kate Matthews is an incoming senior at Bainbridge High School. Kate spent 80 hours this spring working to complete her Girl Scout Gold Award - coordinating and facilitating the installation of two gardens at HRB's Island Homes properties. For Kate, this project was about helping residents grow their own food, to promote healthy eating and encourage Island Home residents to engage with one another while digging in the Shorts Magic Soil . (click on the link to watch a pretty cool video of the Magic Soil delivery.)

This photo shows Kate Matthews with Roger and Sandy Short, owners of Short Family Farms who donated the soil for the project.

We love what our dedicated staff is
doing to help our gardens grow.

Michael Monroe has a passion for plants and a love of the outdoors. In Spring, 2014 Michael joined the staff of HRB and has been working hard to transform the properties and gardens into community oasis'.  What do these gardens mean to Michael? Here's what he said:

"HRB's community gardens represent a relationship with the soil and one's body. A pure clean source of food lovingly nurtured and harvested bringing energy and vitality. Community gardens are also about your neighbor - setting aside differences and working toward a common goal, sharing space and witnessing the work of each others hands."

We love that our residents are growing
healthy food for their families and friends.

89 HRB rentals + 27 owner-occupied homes = 5 Community Gardens

There's a whole lot of growing going on at HRB. Currently five HRB properties have flourishing community gardens. Stop by Island Home, Western View Terrace, Dore cabin/Sadie Woodman house, Ferncliff Villages and Island Terrace this summer and you are bound to see young hands in the dirt and tasty veggies growing on the vine. If you are interested in helping our gardens to grow by becoming a sponsor, or if you would like a personalized tour, contact Katie Davis.

Happy Gardening!
"What I love best about Bainbridge is that it is a community, full of diverse people, talents, perspectives and histories. We have great teachers in our schools and public servants who extend themselves in community life as well as protecting us in emergencies. We have farmers, carpenters, artists and shop owners.  We have musicians and writers, performers and poets, entrepreneurs and adventurers.  And we have a lot of nonprofits who serve us all. As a long-time resident, what affordable housing means to me is that our diverse and treasured friends and neighbors who contribute to the quality of life on Bainbridge Island can also afford to live here.  It is a key element in being a truly inclusive community." - Susie Glass Burdick, Bainbridge Island Resident
