Dear Members and Friends

I hope you and your families are enjoying this beautiful holiday season.  As the year comes to a close, please consider making a contribution to support the Saugus River Watershed Council's Annual Appeal.  Your donation will help us to continue and expand our efforts to protect and restore the natural resources of the Saugus River watershed.  Your donations will help us to:

Educate hundreds of local students about protecting their local watershed through field and classroom programs.  During 2013, the Saugus River Watershed Council and New England Discovery will continue to offer our award-winning environmental education programs free for schools and youth groups in our 11 watershed communities -- Saugus, Lynn, Revere, Wakefield, Lynnfield, Melrose, Malden, Everett, Peabody, Reading and Stoneham.

Monitor and Restore river conditions and critical wildlife habitat throughout the watershed. This past year, we worked in partnership with the National Park Service, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, and the Massachusetts Bays Program to conduct a smelt spawning habitat survey, identifying valuable habitat where smelt lay their eggs in the Saugus River and Shute Brook. During 2013, we will continue this program by implementing restoration projects to improve fish passage and habitat.

Spring 2012.

Protect our valuable natural resources by working in partnership with local communities, businesses and public officials to promote sustainable development practices, reduce stormwater pollution, and adapt to our changing climate.  On January 29th, we will host a workshop focused on lessons learned from hurricane Sandy - protecting coastal resources in a changing climate.  We will also continue advocating for protection of our local resources by submitting written comments and attending public hearings during environmental review of significant development projects, and in response to environmental threats.

We sincerely appreciate all of your volunteer and financial contributions and look forward to working with you to protect and enjoy the Saugus River watershed this year.

Wishing you and your families a happy and healthy 2013!
