Scottish Heights Trailhead

Are you or your service group looking for an idea to "leave your mark" and contribute to the community?  Why not consider donating a bench or picnic table to the new Scottish Heights Trailhead on Charles Avenue?  The new rail-trail park is near completion and will be in need of some resting spots for the trail users.  If interested, please contact Aeric at 463-8336 or send him an email.
Please Watch for Pedestrians

Now that W. Superior Street is complete, we would like to remind travelers to be especially cautious when approaching intersections and watch for pedestrians in the crosswalks.
Here are a few tips for drivers:
  • Look out for and always yield the right-of-way to people walking, jogging, biking, etc.;
  • Pull out slowly from driveways and parking areas while watching for vulnerable road users, including children and others on the sidewalk or nearby pathways;
  • Stop fully before turning at driveways and intersections to make sure you do not cut off pedestrians or approaching bicyclists with right of way;
  • Do not pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks, as they may be allowing a pedestrian to cross the street;
  • Yield to anyone crossing the street when turning left on a green light;
  • Watch for surprising changes in direction, especially by children or cyclists avoiding road hazards.
  • When parallel parked, check for approaching cyclists before opening your door;
  • Leave sufficient space when passing vulnerable road users and take every possible precaution to avoid collision.
And now some tips for pedestrians:
  • Cross the street at an intersection or designated crosswalk when possible and always stop, look left, right, and left again before crossing. Do not rely solely on pedestrian traffic signals;
  • Come to the edge of a parked vehicle, stop and look both ways if it's blocking the view of the street before entering the street. This is also recommended before crossing in front of a stopped vehicle at an intersection if there are additional lanes traveling in the same direction;
  • Try to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them and do not assume that because you can see the driver, the driver can see you;
  • Watch for cars that are turning or backing up;
  • Be vigilant in parking lots, especially when accompanying small children;
  • Increase visibility at night by carrying a flashlight when walking and by wearing light-colored or reflective clothing that highlights body movements.
Proposed Address Numbers Ordinance

The City Commission received an ordinance that would require address numbers be displayed on all buildings within the City of Alma.  The new ordinance will assist public safety and service vehicles locating addresses and answering calls. A copy of the proposed ordinance is available by following this link and is expected to be adopted at the December 8th meeting.
Park Shelter Reservation Program

If you rented a park shelter in previous year, you now have the opportunity to reserve the same shelter for the same period as the previous year's booking.

Early reservations under this criteria will be taken from December 1 - 31 each year for an additional fee. After January 1, park patrons may reserve a shelter on a first-come-first-served basis with preference given to City of Alma residents.

Follow the  link for information on the City's park system and a park shelter reservation form.

Water Conservation Tips
  • Report broken pipes, leaky hydrants and errant sprinklers to property owners or your local water provider.
  • Know where your master water shut-off valve is located. Were a pipe to burst, this could save gallons of water and prevent damage.
