Construction Update

West Superior Street - West Superior Street is open to through traffic. Because construction will not be fully complete until mid-October, there may be lane closures occasionally so that street lights and landscaping can be placed.

Michigan Avenue
- The water main piping is complete on Michigan Avenue. The new water main has passed all bacterial testing and all connections have been made. The road work is all that remains and should be complete by mid-October.

Scottish Heights Restroom & Parking Lot
- Construction of the restroom building is still ongoing. Completion date - end of October.

Riverside Park Pedestrian Bridge and Trail Extension
- Construction is underway on the Riverside Park shared use path and pedestrian bridge project. The concrete and boardwalk work will begin the week of October 5th. The bridge should be on site in mid-October and the project is scheduled to be completed in early November. The two paths will be connected via Prospect to Mechanic, Mechanic to N. State Street, and ending at N. State Street to Riverside Park.

Mechanic Street Shared Use Path & Canoe Launch
- Construction is nearing completion on the shared use path along Lincoln Avenue from Center Street south to the Pine River. The canoe launch is completed at the south termination point along Lincoln Avenue. All that remains is restoration work as well as a flag of concrete near the southeast corner of Center & Lincoln that will be poured soon.

Slater Street Reconstruction
-
Slater Street remains under construction. The sanitary sewer main is now complete along with the storm sewer. Most of the underground utility work is complete with the exception of lowering a few water service lines. After the underground utility work is complete, the road bed will be cut down and a new base will be installed as well as concrete curb and gutter and drive approaches. The project is expected to be substantially complete by the end of October.

Halloween Safety Tips

Candy, goblins, and ghouls! Halloween is fast approaching. It can be a delightfully fun holiday for children and adults alike, but concerns about our children's safety can also bring worry for parents. In today's world, it's important that everyone take some extra steps to prepare for a night of trick-or-treating amusement.

Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.
Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.
Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.
Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat.

Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK and don't run from house to house.
Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation.
Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.
Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.
Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.
Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.
Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.
Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Don't stop at dark houses. Never accept rides from strangers.
Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.

As always, report any suspicious or criminal activity to the police immediately. For emergencies, dial 911. For non-emergencies, contact Central Dispatch at (989) 875-7505.

Water Conservation Tips
  • Wash your pets outdoors, in an area of your lawn that needs water.
  • When cleaning out fish tanks, give the nutrient-rich water to your non-edible plants.
  • When you give your pet fresh water, don't throw the old water down the drain. Use it to water your trees or shrubs.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean patios, sidewalks and driveways, and save water every time.
