Construction Updates

Grafton Avenue Sanitary Sewer Replacement

The Grafton Avenue Sanitary Sewer replacement project is now complete. Both Grafton Avenue and Ely Street are now open to thru traffic.

2015 CIP Argyle & Orchard Street

The Argyle and Orchard Street reconstruct project is drawing to a close and is expected to be open to thru traffic the week of July 13 with weather permitting. Once the topsoil and grass seed has been placed, property owners should water the affected areas if they would like to see the grass grow faster and thicker as we are now entering the dry summer months. There will be no reduction in water rates due to watering of lawns.

2015 CIP Slater Street

The Slater Street reconstruction project will begin on Monday July 13 and will run through September. The road will have the sanitary sewer replaced, storm sewer replacement, as well as storm sewer interceptor lines installed. Slater will have new curb and gutter and an asphalt surface.

2015 Sidewalk Replacement Program

The annual sidewalk replacement program will begin the week of July 13. The area of construction for this year's project is bounded on the west by Wright Avenue, north of Downie St., and bounded on the east by Woodworth and as far north as East End Street. The pink arrows point toward the sidewalks that either will need to be replaced or removed. The City shares with the home owners the cost for construction 50-50. For more information or to potentially add your sidewalks to the repair list, call either Dave Ringle or Kristine Saia at (989) 463-8346.

Scottish Heights Park

Work on the new Scottish Heights restroom and parking lot has begun as fill dirt is being placed on the property. The park and project area is located on the east side of Charles Avenue just south of the Fred Meijer Rail Trail. The restroom and parking lot will be completed in early fall of 2015.

The Alma Public Library Summer Reading Club will be finishing up its last two weeks of the program with a special program on Tuesday, July 14 at 10:00 a.m.  Alma Police Officer Kim Powell will be there to talk safety.  Then on Tuesday, July 21 at 10:00 a.m. there will be the end of the Summer Reading Club party.  All who completed the program will be awarded certificates.  Goodies, treats and special drawings for prizes and cash are also on tap.  Come join the fun!

The fair will be an opportunity to enjoy fair food like caramel corn, elephant ears, and corn dogs while experiencing exhibits, an exciting midway and free stage shows. While at the fair take time to watch the exhibitors show their animal projects and stroll through the exhibit barns to see the creative projects the youth exhibitors created.

Water Conservation Tips
  • Teach children to turn off faucets tightly after each use.

  • When the kids want to cool off, use the sprinkler in an area where your lawn needs it most.
  • Encourage your school system and local government to develop and promote water conservation among children and adults.
  • Monitor your water bill for unusually high use. Your bill and water meter are tools that can help you discover leaks.
Street Light Out? If you notice a street light out in your neighborhood or somewhere in the City, you may contact Consumers Energy through this link to report it.

Free Compost and wood chips are available for self loading, free of charge, outside the yardwaste gates on Washington St., north of the Public Works Garage. Help yourself!
