International Platform For Exchange of Knowledge And Experience in The Field of Cold Forging |
An international platform for exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of cold forging offers this year again the Institute for Metal Forming Technology of the University of Stuttgart in cooperation with Forschungsgesellschaft Umformtechnik mbH by organising the international conference "New Developments in Forging Technology". 250 to 300 representatives from the fields of forging presses and plant engineering, simulation, tools, materials and processes will meet at 4th and 5th June 2013 in Fellbach near Stuttgart to discuss the conference topic "Lightweight design - is not exclusively a matter of material application!". Previously selected national and international speakers will present their own solutions and strategies with regard to this theme.
Major changes of conference concept will bring the following improvements: Well-known companies of forging will present themselves on parallel provided exhibit space, a panel discussion on the second day of the conference allows active participation in open discussion to everybody and for the first time, a series of short presentations given by assistants coming from well-known forming technology institutes in Germany reporting on their current research work is offered.

Safety Survey - Record Number of Participants | A record number of forging plants, 127, participated in this year's FIA Annual Occupational Injury and Illness Survey! This survey is mailed annually to all FIA producer member companies.
Completed returns provide the basis for the Annual Occupational Injury & Illness Report, and the Annual Safety & Health Awards, which will be presented to award winning companies this May, at the FIA Annual Meeting of Members, in San Diego.
Results of the Survey are currently being compiled and companies that participated in the Survey will receive the full Report in mid-March. This is the only exclusively forging focused survey of its kind, offering data that cannot be obtained anywhere else.
Thanks very much for all who participated.

New Research Paper Available On the Subject Of Decarburization In High Alloy Steels. |
By Magdalene Joy Jackson - Graduate Student of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 2012
The purpose of this FIERF sponsored study is to expand the current database of known decarburization depths at given temperatures and to indicate the relationship chromium (Cr) has as an alloying element in high, medium, and low quantities. The steels considered for this study were D2, A2, and O1 tool steels with high, medium, and low chromium content. Members Click here for the full thesis.

Aerospace Aluminum Forging Suppliers Are Requested To Assist With Development Of Design Allowables. |
Users of the MMPDS Handbook (formerly MIL-HDBK-5) have identified a need to have A- and B-basis design allowable properties for several forging alloys. The top priorities are listed below. Having these in the handbook allows the users to design with forgings more easily when approval of a certifying body must be met. Battelle has been the secretariat for this Handbook since 1957 and does the data analysis. It is requested that if you produce the forging alloys below that you contact Jana Rubadue ([email protected]) and let her know. She will send you an Excel form for submitting the lot release or test data. All data is held as company confidential. References from other suppliers who routinely send data and are involved in MMPDS can be supplied if requested.
The data will be analyzed with a report including a summary of the analysis of all suppliers and proposal for design allowables in MMPDS Handbook. The report will include the names of the participating suppliers, but will NOT identify which data summaries go with each supplier. Thus it does give you visibility with the MMPDS members. It is important to acquire data from the major suppliers before doing the analysis, in order to not identify any individual data source and in order to get the minimum allowable (may vary from supplier to supplier for different thicknesses). PLEASE let Jana know if you produce the forgings below or if you have further questions. Your involvement is greatly appreciated.
The alloys of interest are:
2219-T6, AMS 4143 Die, Hand, and Ring Forgings
2219-T851 & T852, AMS 4144, Ring and Hand Forgings
6061-T651 & T652, AMS 4312, Ring and Hand Forgings
7050-T74, AMS 4107, Die Forgings
7050-T7452, AMS 4108 Hand Forgings only

FIA Annual Meeting - Come Celebrate 100 years of History | Celebrate FIA's Centennial at this year's Annual Meeting of Members to be held May 4-6 at the historic Hotel del Coronado in San Diego, CA. Everyone in attendance will have the opportunity to participate in our historical journey through the past 100 years by way of our displays, videos and recognition of key individuals and companies that have guided our industry from the beginning. We also have a great line up of speakers. In addition to our economic and legislative updates, other meeting topics will include: IT'S OUR SHIP - CREATING A HIGH PERFORMANCE BUSINESS CULTURE with former Navy Commander and Author Mike Abrashoff. An inspiring story of innovative leadership and organizational transformation, Mike Abrashoff took command of the worst-performing ship in the fleet and made it #1 by changing his leadership style and the culture ... not the crew. LEADING THROUGH TIMES OF CHANGE with Rich Teerlink, Former Chairman and CEO, Harley-Davidson, Inc.The lessons from Harley-Davidson's turnaround prove how great things happen when management and labor work together in a climate of trust. PIRATES IN NECKTIES: GOVERNMENT VS. THE FREE MARKET, WHICH IS WORSE? with P.J. O'Rourke, Best-Selling Author & leading Political Satirist, will wrap up the business portion of our meeting. O'Rourke combines the skill and discipline of an investigative reporter with a comedian's sense of the absurd and the stupid. Known as a hard-bitten, cigar-smoking conservative, he, in fact, bashes all political persuasions. The perfect climate in San Diego will serve as the ideal environment for listening to these speakers, and catching up with old friends and making new ones - not only during the formal sessions, but also at social events like the opening reception, golf, tours, spouse programs and the Monday night Dinner Dance. So please join us in San Diego this year, to celebrate 100 years of our history and maximize the value of your membership in Forging Industry Association. Members are asked to make their own hotel reservations by April 12. For more information on the hotel, meeting and registration, click here or contact FIA for a printed brochure. |
