Farm Notes: Season Recap

As we move into the fall season, the summer crops wane and the fall crops remain. This was a very good summer season. Things started off slow with a cool spring. The summer proved to be cooler than normal, which made pleasant temperatures outside.  There were no heat waves this summer.  Instead of the dog days of summer with all the vegetables growing like crazy before our eyes, they grew more slowly, at a nice pace to harvest and enjoy.  The rains fell lightly on the fields with enough frequency that seeds germinated well.  We still needed to irrigate some, but with no drought conditions we never needed to use our new 7000 feet of irrigation pipe. Some season in the future we will be happy that we have more ability to keep the crops well watered when the rains never come. While the cool spring made for light harvests in June, the late frost made up for it with abundant harvests in October.

The flavors and quantities this year seemed to be near perfect. Some of this can be attributed to the wonderful weather, but much can be attributed to the years of experience of Farmer Dave's team. The dedication and loving care of all on the farm, combined with the passion of those members that help at the pick up locations, completed the loop of getting the God given harvest from field to you. Thank you to all who support Farmer Dave's and to all who make it happen.

To good eating and good health,

Farmer Dave
