Personnel Update...Continued
This year we implemented the Differentiated Roles (DF) program. The teachers in this program are called Teacher Leaders. DF allows teachers to work half-time in the classroom and half-time as coaches to other Steele teachers. Teachers receive feedback from Teacher Leaders who are teaching the same or similar content and grade level. Sarah Kirkwood and Robin Donaldson were our 2015/16 Teacher Leaders. Next year, we'll expand the program to three Teacher Leaders.

Sarah Kirkwood will continue as Teacher Leader for kindergarten and first grade teachers. Robin Donaldson is moving back into the classroom full-time; she missed the joys of having a class for the entire day. Natalie Pyle will be Teacher Leader for the 4/5 team, and Marissa Sarkesian will be Teacher Leader for second and third grade teachers. I know Natalie and Marissa will do an amazing job in their new roles.

This left us with two open half-time positions: one in second grade with Marissa and one in 4/5 with Natalie. We are filling these two positions with one teacher. Although logistically this may challenge us, the hiring committee and CSC decided that having a full-time teacher was beneficial to building community with each classroom and would best meet our students' needs.

I'm thrilled to announce that Brad Summerville will partner with Natalie and Marissa. Brad will teach math, science, and social studies. Brad was an intern in Natalie's class last semester, and we're excited to have him join the Steele community. To learn more about Brad, click here.

Home Tour
Wow - another successful Home Tour! Despite the weather, we had incredible turnout, raised a good deal of money for Steele and DPS Educational Outreach, and had lots of fun.

The coordination and effort it takes to pull off a successful Home Tour is monumental. I want to thank everyone who made this day a great success, with a special thank-you to our co-chairs, Danielle Vitale and Kiki Lyons.

CSC Elections
I'm excited to announce we have four parents interested in serving on the Collaborative School Committee (CSC) next year. The CSC - comprised of staff, parents, and community members - helps Steele make decisions that have a positive impact on student growth. We have two openings for next year, so we'll have an election.

The interested parents are: Nikki Dawson, Jennifer Olson, Stacy Crum, and Toby Nuber. To view their CSC nomination forms, click here.

All Steele parents are encouraged to vote. We'll use survey monkey to cast ballots. The link is:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SteeleCSCBallot.

Thanks for all you do!

Cheers,
Kevin

artSteele Art Show
TODAY, Thursday, May 12, 2016, 6:30 - 8:30 PM. Please join us on this very special evening to celebrate our Steele artists. Each student will have a 2D piece of artwork of their choosing and a 3D collaborative piece. This is a treasure hunt (works are not grouped by class or grade) - the prize is seeing your child's artwork displayed! Background music by Steele students, along with refreshments.

Cafeteria News
As in the past, Food and Nutrition Services requires that all students who eat hot lunch have money on their accounts, so we can start the end-of-year process. Starting tomorrow, May 13, students will be unable to charge meals over the amount currently in their accounts. If they do not have enough funds on account, they will receive an alternative meal. Any money leftover in students' accounts at the end of the year carries over into next year. If you have questions, call me at 720-424-3726. I'm in the kitchen from 6:00 AM until 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday. We hope everyone has a wonderful summer!

- Dee Sauer, Cafeteria Manager

PTA Logo Wash Park Home Tour
A little rain couldn't stop us - this year's Home Tour raised more than $50,000 for Steele! Thank you so much to our wonderful community of students, faculty, staff, and parents for their volunteer efforts and a fantastic job selling tickets. A special thanks to our 2016 Home Tour
co-Chairs Danielle Vitale and Kiki Lyons and their Home Tour Committee!

Congratulations to the Bonnie Brae Ice Cream-winning classrooms for this year's ticket sales competition:
  • K/1 - Margulies - Room 103
  • 2/3 - Thomas - Room 202
  • 4/5 - Parks - Room 306
Thanks to our Home Tour volunteers, we were able to fill our minimum needs with last-minute help. We truly could not have had a successful event without every position filled. Our final volunteer drawing winners are Joe Welch, Jaime Seemiller, and Laurie Gilbertson -- pick up your gifts in the school office. Gifts were donated by Wash Park Grille, The Work, and Quality Health Concepts. Please patronize these businesses who contributed to our Home Tour success.

Finally, if you still have ticket money to turn, it's not too late! Please make sure to turn in any outstanding money to the Steele office ASAP.

DigItDaySteele Garden "Dig It!" Day: May 14
"Dig It!" Day will be THIS Saturday, May 14 from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Bring the whole family! NO experience necessary; plenty of ways for adults and kids to help prepare the beds for the planting season. Some tools are provided, but if you have garden tools at home, we encourage you to bring them. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The Garden Committee is looking for new members to join and help make the garden flourish! A Garden Volunteer Open House After Party will be hosted the evening of May 14 at the home of Shari and Ken Leidner from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Food will be provided; please bring a drink to share. Please, no children. This open house is a great way to learn more about the work of the Garden Committee. RSVP to Shari if you plan to attend.

Adopt-A-Bed in the Steele Garden for the Summer
The Steele Garden Committee is looking for families to "adopt-a-bed" for the summer in our school garden. Volunteers are asked to weed a bed once a week (June through August) and monitor the bed to assure the drip irrigation system is working. Any watering issues will be handled by a garden committee member. Committee members will also be available if you are going to be out of town and need help finding a substitute family in your absence.

In addition to knowing you are supporting the school garden's Seed to Cafeteria program, you may harvest and keep what is in your bed over the summer!

Contact Aimee Corazzari for more information and to sign up.
