Dates To Remember
From the Principal
CoffeeCoffee with the Principal
We'll have our first coffee with the principal on Friday, October 2 from 8:30 to 9:30 AM. We'll meet in either the library or cafeteria.

This is a great opportunity to meet with other parents and me in an informal setting. We'll get to know one another better, learn more about Steele, and you can ask any questions you have that you didn't want to send an email about. I'm always impressed with the thoughtful questions parents ask and the thoughtful conversations that ensue from these questions. This is also a great time to hear other parents' perspectives and to learn ways that they have addressed issues. I always leave coffee with the principal as a better principal and father.

I hope you can join us on Friday, October 2.

School Tours for Prospective Steele Families
I wanted to communicate the dates for our upcoming school tours. These are tours for families that are considering sending their child to Steele during the 2016-17 school year. This information will be on our website in the near future.

Each session consists of a 30-minute guided tour of the school, followed by an informational meeting with me. I usually tell new parents about Steele for 10 minutes and answer questions for 20. If you know families that are considering Steele for next year, please forward them this information or have them check our website.

Dates for Steele Tours
(All tours start at 8:30 AM)
  • October 20
  • November 3
  • December 1
  • December 15
  • January 13
  • January 26
Please check in at the office when you arrive. Each tour will last approximately one hour.

Thanks for all you do!

Cheers,
Kevin

News from the Steel Cafeteria

Breakfast = ENERGY: Make sure your kids are fueled up for the day and ready to learn! Did you know Steele offers a FREE BREAKFAST to every Steele student? Grab-N-Go breakfasts offer a quick, nutritious way to start the day. Serving from 7:50 AM until first bell in the cafeteria. Eat it there or enjoy outside.

Online Directory is Available!
If your family data is confirmed in MySchoolAnywhere, you should have received an email recently with instructions for logging in to the online directory. The email went to every parent (in confirmed families) for whom an email exists in the Steele database in MySchoolAnywhere, as well as all staff. If you didn't receive the email and believe you should have, contact the directory coordinator. Print directory is coming soon -- stay tuned!

2015 September Art News
Fourth and fifth graders are researching photographers. They have begun to make shot lists and are learning about the AP-snap seed on IPADS. The students will begin to shoot photos inside and outside the building. Our students will be learning vocabulary and how to set up interesting pictures.

The fourth and fifth graders have been invited to photographer Chris Brown's Boulder studio on Saturdays and Sundays, 10/03, 10/04, 10/10, and 10/11 from 12:00 to 6:00 PM. For more information about the studio, click here. Steele Stallions should introduce themselves as students of Miriam Ungar. They will receive a bookmark. Chris is happy to share his wonderful photographic experiences.

Third graders have been introduced to Boston artist Mark F. Cooper. He's a sculptor and painter whom I had the privilege to meet this summer at the Seattle Art Faire at the Living Computer Museum. Working independently and/or collaboratively, the students have built armatures. They will use plaster of paris to cover their armatures. Pieces will be on view soon.

Second graders are working on creating artistic personal maps -- using patterns, different mediums, and words that describe themselves. Completed pieces will be displayed on the art website.

First graders are learning about telling visual stories, and using dry and wet watercolor techniques. We'll also be learning about collage. Finished pieces will be on display in the halls.

Kindergarteners are exploring the art room. Students are drawing, using watercolors, and learning the rituals and routines of the art room. We'll soon begin to make magic wands out of paper mache.

All classes will work on academic art vocabulary skills, as well as other art skills. For specific grade-level skills, see the art website.

Parents are welcome in the art room. I'm in need of a volunteer to wash paint shirts once a month and a volunteer to take pictures of the art for the website. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

- Miriam Ungar, Steele Visual Arts Teacher

Days and times vary, and programs change throughout the school year. For information about the programs offered, cost, and times check the Steele website.

HavanaNights PTA Fall Fundraiser: Havana Nights, Friday, November 13, 6:00 PM
Steele's fall fundraiser, Havana Nights, will be happening on Friday, November 13. This adults-only fundraiser is a Steele tradition for getting together and celebrating all that we love about our school! Steele Exclusives are part of that tradition...bringing together friends, families, and community with all profits going to fund our school. Steele Exclusives are parent-organized events that can be purchased for a "share" price. An example would be a dinner party for 10: the hosts provide the location, setting, theme. Each share could be sold for $50 pp...and the total money raised ($500) would go to Steele! There is no limit to the size or scope of your event! Other ideas: neighborhood progressive party, mother/son dance, holiday caroling and cocoa, group hike, bicycle bar hopping evening...the options are endless! Please contact Crissy or Courtney to host an Exclusive.  Interested in hosting but not sure how? Contact us and we can brainstorm ideas.

Room Parents Needed
Classrooms 114 (Lantz), 308 (Sarkesian), and 309 (Donaldson) are looking for a helpful parent or two to be their room parents. Assist the teacher with classroom events and help build your classroom community!. Read more about this terrific volunteer opportunity.

Shopping Rewards Programs
We've told you about the Safeway and King Soopers grocery cards. Other ways you can direct merchant donations to benefit Steele include the Target RED Card and Amazon Smile program. Send cash back to Steele if you shop with these merchants. It won't cost you anything but a few minutes of your time.
