New Curriculum Resources
This year we will be implementing new literacy curriculum resources at Steele. This is a welcome addition for both teachers and students.

Grades 4/5 are implementing a curriculum named Expeditionary Learning (EL). Most schools in DPS have adopted this curriculum. If your 4/5 kiddos have been talking about human rights the last few days, it's because that's the focus of their first unit. The purpose of EL is to tie topics and learning into a central theme, so that the learning is relevant for all students. This fits right in line with our British Primary philosophy, and we're excited to have great resources at our fingertips to implement this style of learning.

Grade K through 3 are part of a curriculum pilot called Mondo. We applied for this pilot last year and were one of 15 DPS schools chosen. This curriculum also works in themes with a great connection between writing and reading. In addition to having consistent themes for students, there's a strong emphasis on foundational reading skills. This has been a focus in the lower grades for the past two years, and we're excited that we can use a curriculum that will provide our students with consistent language and provide our teachers with ready-made resources.

Both curricula are rigorous and feature high-level reading text. We're thrilled to have such great tools for our use.

Back To School Night!
BTSNDon't forget, Back To School Night is tonight! There will be childcare in the gym starting at 5:00 PM. The program starts at 5:15. I look forward to seeing everyone there!
Thanks for all you do!

Cheers,
Kevin

Drama News
Hello Steele Families, and welcome back to Steele. I'm looking forward to my 11th year as Steele's drama teacher. I think drama is vital to rounding out a child's education. I tell the kindergarteners that drama is used in everyday life. When we go to the store and interact with the clerk, that's a form of drama. When we're introduced to a new person, that's drama too. Any time you have to think about what you want to say and how you're going to say it, it's drama.

My goal is to develop interpersonal skills as each children delves deeper into understanding themselves. When you put yourself into a character's role, you develop empathy for others.

This year, kindergarteners will start with a storytelling unit. They'll learn characterization, collaboration, and the basics of acting. They'll then move into stations, where they'll tell and re-enact stories, build mini-sets, create story lines, and explore puppetry. They'll do lots of structured role-play and play-acting.

First graders will continue role-playing, but we'll focus more on audience awareness, purpose, and theatrical basics.

Second graders will continue with the aforementioned work, but we'll also move into character development and the use of scripted scenes.

Third graders will work on skits. They'll write their own skits, create their own characters, and also use already-published material for classroom performances.

Fourth and fifth graders will do performances this year. Their first performance will be Aladdin, during the week of December 7 (more details to come). Many of the fourth and fifth grade classrooms will then prepare a performance for the DPS Shakespeare Festival on Friday, April 29.

It should be a great year in drama. I hope your children enjoy and learn!

Thank you,
Mr. Lane Miller
