Pat & Julie Donahue and Janet Day had a good time at the United Way of the Lakeshore Leadership Circle Thank You Event at the Muskegon County airport on May 30.  The Donahues were awarded a Tocqueville Society award as the newest members of our local major gifts society.
 
United Way would like to thank Jim & Kristine Tyler of Tyler Sales,  Dianne Hoofman of the Muskegon County Airport, the Brownstone Restaurant, Rex Vanderlinde with Executive Air, and John Workman of Eagle Alloy and the Hooligans for all their help and sponsorship of this special event.

 

20th Annual Day of Caring
Event Update
  

 Online registration for our 20th Annual Day of Caring event will close at midnight on Thursday, June 13.  Beginning Friday, June 14 please call the United Way office at 877-722-3134 to register, or register at the event on Friday, June 21.  If you have any questions, please contact Lynn Keech at lynn@unitedwaylakeshore.org.

  

Project requests are being accepted for both Oceana and Newaygo Counties.  Please contact Laura Nugent in Oceana County at (231) 907-0515 or Lynn Keech at (231) 722-3134 for Newaygo County.

Chairs Announced

  

Laura Carpenter, Plant Manager at Alcoa Howmet Thermatech Coatings in Whitehall, has been named the Muskegon County Chair for the 2013 campaign. Laura is married to Rob and together they have two children. Laura has been actively involved with United Way for the past ten years and has served on the United Way Boards in Muskegon, Northwest Connecticut and Northwest Indiana. She has also been involved with the community investment process serving as a previous chair of the Strong Families Impact Panel.
  
In Newaygo County,  Holly Moon will lead the campaign. She is married to Joe and they have two daughters and eight grandchildren. A lifelong Newaygo County resident, they live in Fremont. Holly has been the Newaygo County Treasurer for 8 years and has been part of the United Way of the Lakeshore Newaygo County Committee for 5 years. With her commitment and connections we are excited to have her leading the campaign.
  
In Oceana County, Kevin Lucht has agreed to lead the 2013 campaign once again, serving as the chair in 2012 as well.  Kevin came to West Michigan in 2005 from Northeast Wisconsin and is the Plant Manager at Rothbury Steel.  His success in last year's campaign helped Oceana County exceed their goal.  With a year of experience we believe Kevin can continue to pave the way for greater impact in Oceana County.

United Way Employee Campaign Coordinator Training 2013

 

It's time for a campaign tune up!  The tune up will include tools for conducting an easy and exciting United Way campaign; tools for building a dynamic team; and tools for taking your campaign to the next level!

2nd Annual Ride United Event

 

Registration is now open for the 2nd Annual RIDE UNITED event which will take place on Friday, September 13.  There will be a 100 and 50 mile ride option.  More details to come!  All riders registered by August 23 will receive a semi-custom rider's jersey. Registered riders are encouraged to gather pledges through their Firstgiving account which will be set up during online registration. All pledges raised by riders will benefit the local United Way of their choice.  Registration ends August 30.

 

Sponsors needed for the 2013 event!  A $3,000 Century Sponsor includes your business logo printed on the rider jerseys and on all marketing materials and the Ride United website.  A $1,500 Paceline Sponsor includes your business logo on the Ride United website and all marketing materials.

Saturday, July 6:  Harbor Hospice MLive Regatta from 12 to 5:30 p.m. at Muskegon Yacht Club. This event includes the race, a silent auction and a picnic.  The public is welcome. 
 
Wednesday, July 10:  The Fifth Third E-Bus event will be returning from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Muskegon County governmental campus on Apple Avenue.  Questions about this event to Francine.Gaston@53.com.
 

Thursday, July 11:  Maranda Park Party from 12 to 2 p.m. at Smith Ryerson Park, 550 Wood Street at Sumner.  Park Parties offers an unforgettable afternoon of fun including games, rides, entertainment, food, prizes and more.  And as always, everyone is invited and everything is FREE.  Please call the City of Muskegon Parks Department if you have questions (231) 724-6991.

Saturday, August 24:  The Human Race - 5K Race and Fun Walk.  8 a.m. start time at the Roosevelt Park Community Center.  $20 adults, $10 age 19 and younger.  Please register at www.volunteercenterwm.com by August 15.

United Way Billboard Sponsorship Opportunity

Saturday, June 15:  Muskegon Heights Festival in the park parade.  Parade starts at 11 a.m.
 
Thursday, July 4:  White Lake Area Annual 4th of July parade.  Parade steps off at 10 a.m.

Northside Family Fun Fest parade.  Parade steps off at 7:30 p.m.

Oceana County News

 

Pentwater mobile food truck sponsored by the Pentwater Junior Women's Club, is held on the third Tuesday of each month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pentwater Fire Barn.  2013 dates are:  June 18, July 16, August 20, September 17, October 15, November 19, and December 17.

The household pantry stocks items such as bedding, curtains, rugs, silverware, dishes, cups, glasses, vacuums, small appliances, can openers, dust pans, towels, sheets, blankets, etc.

 

The furniture ministry is always happy to accept your furniture donations.

 

The baby pantry is in need of onesies, diapers, wipes, lotions, 0-12 month outfits, socks, sippy cups, bottles, blankets and toys.

 

There is always a need for bikes as a means for transporation.  If you have a spare bike or two that you are not using, please call Matt or Paula at 773-3448.

Women's Leadership Network 2013 Calendar

of Events

 

Tuesday, June 18, 12 p.m.  Tour of the new Family Promise facility, located at 1275 Kenneth, and a review of Muskegon County homeless data, including children and youth.  Hosting this event are Dee Carlson, McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Coordinator, and Marian McDermed, Executive Director of Family Promise.

    

Friday, July 26, 12 p.m.  "Raising an Ethical Child" lecture  with Dr. Elizabeth Day, Professor from the Santa Clara University School of Education and Ethics Center.  This event will take place at the Muskegon Museum of Art, 296 West Webster Avenue, downtown Muskegon. 

 

Tuesday, September 24, 12 p.m.  "Adopt a room" at Every Woman's Place.

 

Tuesday, November 19, 12 p.m.  Volunteer at the Salvation Army, 1221 Shonat, Muskegon, for the Christmas toy campaign.  Volunteer at the Kids' Food Basket in downtown Muskegon.

 

Mission Statement:  The Women's Leadership Network of United Way of the Lakeshore exists to build a powerful coalition of women, in order that we can:  increase awareness of needs in our community, particularly those impacting women and children; provide a forum to learn more about the needs of the community and the organizations that address those needs; and encourage women to become leadership donors.  This group of women is comprised of those giving $500 or more annually to United Way.
