Fifth Third Bank

E-Bus Event

In 2011, Fifth Third Bank brought its "E-bus" to Muskegon, and invited local nonprofits to participate in a resource fair. Over 200 community residents registered for the event and took advantage of opportunities to receive free credit reports, talk with mortgage counselors, and visit with representatives of local agencies to learn more about financial stability and employment programs and services.

The Fifth Third E-bus will be returning this summer, and once again, local agencies are invited to participate in the resource fair. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, July 10,  from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Muskegon County governmental campus on Apple Avenue.

Any nonprofit agency engaged in providing programs or services related to financial education, employment, asset building, education, housing, or health is welcome to reserve a table for the fair. Tents and tables will be provided.

If you may be interested in participating, and would like to reserve a table now, please notify Francine Gaston at Francine.Gaston@53.com.

2nd Annual Ride United Event

Ride United debuted in September 2009 when avid cyclist, Mike Demos, was challenged by fellow DTE Energy RIDE3employees to ride his bike to work.  This was a 100 mile commute from his home in Kentwood to DTE in Mount Pleasant.  Mike accepted the challenge with the stipulation  that DTE staff would support him by pledging donations to United Way.  From Mike's solo efforts in 2009, Ride United has continued to grow as more cyclists step forward to support their community and test their endurance by completing the challenge.

Registration is now open for the 2nd Annual Ride United event which will take place on Friday, September 13, 2013.  There will be a 100 and 50 mile ride option.  More details to come!

All riders registered by August 23 will receive a semi-custom rider's jersey. Registered riders are encouraged to gather pledges through their Firstgiving account which will be set up during online registration. All pledges raised by riders will benefit the local United Way of their choice.  Registration ends August 30.

Medicaid Coverage

Michigan law enforcement leaders, including Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler, recently asked state lawmakers to extend Medicaid coverage to protect unborn children and address the health needs of older children and families in an effort to curb later crime. The officials released a report from Fight Crime: Invest in Kids that spotlights how Medicaid coverage for expectant mothers can protect children from abuse and neglect and keep children from being born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or Fetal Alcohol Effects, which affect many adults and adolescents arrested for crimes.

Bringing more children and teens into Medicaid will enable them to be screened by physicians for mental health and substance abuse issues, which also have a high impact on criminal behavior.

"Medicaid can and should pay for many of the interventions that have proven to be effective in reducing

aggressive behavior among very young children and older youth," said Muskegon County Sheriff Dean

Roesler. "Dealing with these problems early on is the best way to get kids on the right path before they

start committing serious crimes that lead them to jail."

The law enforcement leaders emphasized the value of extending Medicaid as a cost effective way to save taxpayer dollars now and in the future. Each child who drops out of school, uses drugs, and goes on to become career criminals costs society an average of $2.5 million.
