Don't forget to "spring forward" on Sunday, March 10!  Daylight Savings time begins.

Volunteers needed to help
invest, determine priorities

Have you ever wondered how United Way invests donations received from the annual campaign?  Community volunteers work in teams to learn about local services, review programs and make recommendations how to invest donations in programs that are positively impacting people's lives.  The decisions are made entirely by United Way donors, and this review process is one of the most critical functions of United Way.

The community investment process takes about 12 hours, plus reading time.  It begins with site visits and reviewing applications in April and hearing presentations from the agency programs in May.

For more information on how you can help, please email Lisa Tyler, Vice President Community Impact, at lisa@unitedwaylakeshore.org.

Featured Program:
Healthy Families

Sue and Mark were expecting twins when they were referred to Healthy Families, a program of Catholic Charities that receives funding from United Way. They also had a 5-year-old son. The parents were both high school graduates and Mark worked full time. Sue was completing her Certified Nurse's Assistant (CNA). As the worker learned about the family, a history of abuse and depression became evident.

The mother had been trying to deal with the issues surrounding being a victim of abuse as a child that led to her depression. After the twins were born, it was evident that the mother and father would need much support. As the worker educated the family on child development, she also worked closely with the mom on her own issues. The worker's support and encouragement directed the mom to the correct mental health services and also for the parents to work on their relationship.

With the continued guidance of the worker and community resources, the mother's mental health improved, as well as the parents' relationship. The parents were now spending more time doing activities with their children. The mother completed her CNA and is employed full time and for the first time, feels good about herself. The twins are also doing well.
