Lie-Nielsen Toolworks began in 1981 as an effort to make top-quality hand tools available again from a U.S. maker, and to revive discontinued but useful designs so the average woodworker could obtain them. Today they make over 100 types of planes, saws, spokeshaves, chisels, floats and more.

Lie-Nielsen will bring their full line of hand tools to Community Forklift, and demonstrate techniques useful to both professionals and amateurs. You can try the tools, ask questions, and experience how woodworking with hand tools is rewarding, quiet, and surprisingly efficient.

HANDS-ON DEMOS FROM THE EXPERTS:

Members of the local SAPFM chapter will demonstrate the use of hand tools to create period-accurate furniture reproductions and invite participants to try their hand at various joinery techniques.

Blackburn Tools, offers a range of finely crafted dovetail, tenon, sash, and joinery saws made in the 19th century style, as well as saw filing guides and layout tools.

With a passion for carving greenwood products, Don Nalezyty has been trained by top greenwood workers and spoon carvers from all over the world. Having taught courses locally and abroad, his love of carving is only equaled by his love of teaching this fascinating and relaxing pastime to others. Join Don at Community Forklift for a spoon carving demo.

Community Giving Spotlight
by Alex Winter, Community Services Coordinator

Hey Forklift Fans,

Did you know that YOU (yes, you!) support our local giving programs?  Every time you shop at the Forklift or make a donation, you help us provide free building materials, appliances, and other household necessities to neighbors in need and to other fantastic nonprofits doing great work in our communities.

One of these wonderful organizations is Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSS/NCA).  They welcome hundreds of refugees to the Washington, DC metro area every year. They support their clients during this important transition by mobilizing community partners and offering a comprehensive range of services including housing assistance, employment training, immigration services, and social programming.

Community Forklift recently awarded LSS/NCA a materials grant for dining tables, dressers, chairs, and other household items, so our new neighbors can come home to a cozy (greener!) living space. By saving on these furniture costs, LSS/NCA can use their funds to further serve their growing number of clients, helping them achieve self-sufficiency and success in our community.

Know of any community organizations that could benefit from free materials from the Forklift? Please refer them to our Community Building Blocks program!

This might interest those of you who are into historic preservation:  the next conference of the Small Museum Association is being held in Hyattsville in February!  There are even a few conference scholarships available for students, and for folks who volunteer or work at museums. The application deadline is November 13th, so please share this link with anyone who might be eligible.

Help your congregation save money
and get free trees!

There are FREE trees available for religious communities in Prince George's County! Trees for Sacred Places is a wonderful program that can help your congregation plant trees AND save on stormwater impact fees through Prince George's Alternative Compliance Program.

This program is also available statewide, so if you have connections with churches or faith-owned property anywhere in Maryland, please spread the word! For more info, visit  www.InterfaithChesapeake.org/Tree_Planting_Program
