An Intern's Summer Experience

George assisting a Forklift Fan at a Community Forklift workshop

by George Howe Cole
Parkdale High School, Summer Intern
My experience at Community Forklift is one I will always remember.
I may be an assistant event coordinator, but I got to experience every aspect of planning and coordinating an event. I was basically placed in the shoes of the event coordinator, and it was quite frightening at first but I eventually got over my anxiety. Most of my experiences as an assistant event coordinator were exciting, and others, not so much. One of the things I found interesting were the workshops and the weeks of planning that go behind them. I've never stopped to think of it before, but planning a workshop is time consuming and exhausting, however, at the end of the day one realizes that it was worth it.
As far as I'm concerned almost every aspect of my internship was interesting. Community Forklift has a great work environment that I enjoyed. I've gained new skills that could be used in my everyday life, skills that cannot be gained anywhere else but Community Forklift. It's an environment surrounded with individuals who are dedicated to what they do and do it the best way possible. This happens to be a good influence on me, as an intern working at Community Forklift, it's been a great pleasure working alongside everyone in the company. It's an experience I will always remember and I'm proud to be one of the Forklift Family.

Community Forklift Partners with Greenbuild Legacy Project
Greenbuild, an international conference and expo focused on green building and construction, is coming to DC this November. Expected to bring in over 30,000 people to the DC metro area, the impact won't just be on traffic, it'll also leave a lasting mark on DC's Capital Area Food Bank*.
Through the Greenbuild Legacy Project, a permanent display of service, education, and gratitude given each year to the city that hosts the conference, DC will be gifted with an urban food studio, which will be located at the food bank.
The urban food studio, which is being constructed with some reused and recycled materials from Community Forklift, will provide critical programming on nutrition, cooking, and gardening.
The project is still seeking funding, so if you would like to help support the critical work to be performed in CAFB's new urban food studio, please consider making a donation, or contact Emily English at [email protected].
*The Capital Area Food Bank serves over 500,000 people struggling with hunger in the DC metro area through its network of 500+ partner agencies, including churches, synagogues, senior centers and other community groups. Completion of this project will allow the organization to expand its educational offerings and further its mission of empowering and enlightening the community about issues of hunger and nutrition.
