SAVE THE DATE
for this year's Garden Party:
March 28th

On March 28th (the last Saturday in March),
Community Forklift will be hosting our 6th annual Spring Garden Party.

The event has become a local tradition, drawing gardeners, treehuggers, farmers, and families from around the DC region.  Last year, we celebrated the arrival of spring with over 1,500 visitors, and this year's event is expected to be even bigger.

The Garden Party is where it's at! Last year, we had 1,500 Forklift Fans stop by to mix, mingle, and grab some garden supplies.
With more tool collection events this year (read about the collections below), we expect this year's selection of garden goods to be more plentiful than ever before!

So start getting your costume ready for the contest; people and pets are encouraged to wear jaunty hats, frilly dresses, seersucker suits, flowers, and other springtime attire.

If you're interested in having an information table, playing live music, or hosting a workshop at the event, please contact Events[at]CommunityForklift.org

Q:  How Does your Garden Grow?
A:  With tools! And sun and soil, water and patience

We're gonna be honest. We were a tiny bit concerned when our amazing partner, American Plant, said they couldn't host our annual garden tool collection this year due to renovations in their parking lot.

It didn't take long, though, for other local garden centers to come to the rescue.  They helped us turn a bunch of lemons into sweet, sweet lemonade!

This year, instead of collecting tools in one location, we're going to be all over the region, offering several dates and times to drop off gently-used & surplus garden supplies and patio furniture during the month of March. Big thanks to Campbell & Ferrara in Alexandria and Behnke's in Beltsville for hosting us.

Stay tuned for details, and meanwhile, start cleaning out your shed!  You don't really need 12 rakes or 20 shovels, do you?

And, if you can't wait until the collection events in March, feel free to drop your unwanted garden tools, patio furniture, and lawncare donations off at our warehouse. We accept donations every day of the week, up until a half hour before closing.

The Forklift Freezers and a few of their friends, at the 2015 Polar Bear Plunge to benefit Chesapeake Climate Action Network.
They came and they froze. Not only did they have fun jumping in the icy Potomac, but they raised $1,712 from friends, family, and Forklift Fans to benefit the Chesapeake Climate Action Network.  A HUGE thank you goes out to our financial supporters - you know who you are and we're glad we know you.

The Prince Hall Masons Rock!
The  Prince Hall Masons of Hyattsville (Shelton D. Redden Lodge #139hit us like a ton of bricks when they volunteered with us on this year's Martin Luther King Day of Service.*

From the moment they arrived, they were hard at work moving every door in our door department (there were 776 at last count), measuring them, and cleaning up behind them.

These Masons have been serving the Hyattsville and Prince George's County community for over 20 years. Composed of Freemasons (a fraternal, community service-based organization) the lodge's major programs are its Community Involvement Program, Seniors Assistance Program, and Youth Safety and Mentoring Program.  Activities include:

  • Coordinating walk/runs, breakfasts, food donations, revitalization efforts, and parade participation
  • Assisting the elderly with Bingo nights, food delivery, social events, and facility maintenance
  • Helping families with the free Masonic Child Identification Program (CHIP) and mentoring efforts

The Prince Hall Freemasons welcome individuals of all backgrounds and faiths to join. SDR 139's ultimate goal is to be the premier fraternity and institute in the area (MD, DC, and VA) for instructing its members on how to effect positive, lasting change in their communities.

*We'd also like to thank Prince George's Community College, and the College Park Tennis Club for volunteering with us on MLK Day.  Special thanks to the Central Kenilworth Avenue Community Development Corporation for supporting our volunteer program.
