Tanglewood Works--our best friend for the holidays!
Nifty November Sales
Dear Forklift Fans,

Over the years, we've seen a lot of weird stuff come through the warehouse.  From huge steps out of the old Petworth Library to ornate pews from the renovation of a Capitol Hill church, there is always a surprise waiting for you here.

Well, now we can even boast about our flying toaster! The toaster, along with other lamps and clocks made from vintage appliances, is just one of many unusual offerings at our Mistletoe Market.  We'll be offering all sorts of gifts from local artists every day of the week throughout November and December - check out all the details below!

Big thanks to everyone who came out last week to our fall festival, "This Old Warehouse!"  For nine years now, Community Forklift employees, volunteers, donors, and customers have been restoring homes and local communities.  This was a fun restoration celebration!  The musicians, community partners, and workshops were fantastic.

But if you missed it, never fear - we've got another fun event coming up right after Thanksgiving (details below)!

Mistletoe Market:
Something for Everyone on your Holiday List

What's green, affordable, fun-and even smells good? Why, Community Forklift's sixth annual Mistletoe Marketplace, of course.

Thus far, more than a dozen local artists are displaying and selling their handmade, one-of-a-kind recycled and upcycled treasures in the Forklift's warehouse from now through December.

More invited artists will be added as the season progresses. The market offers an appealing array of jewelry, hangable and wearable artwork, woodcraft, metalwork, fashion accessories, holiday crafts, greeting cards and housewares. Prices start as low as $3.

Here's just a sampling:

Amina Ahmad of Takoma Park, Md., uses natural fragrance oils and essential oils to create scented soy candles with a literary touch
Valeria Birch of Fairfax, Va., recycles cast-away tile, stone and glass into remarkable mosaic artwork

Joy Ashcraft of Potomac, Md, gives old clothing and military uniforms new life by transforming them into scarves, pillows and T-shirt bags, as well as Christmas trees and stockings

John Davis of Hyattsville, Md., keeps leather and old belts out of landfills by fashioning decorative wrist cuffs

Erika Florez and Lauren Strange of Washington, D.C., draw on the  wonders of the natural world to make their own brand of eco-friendly greeting cards.

The Mistletoe Marketplace is one way the Forklift supports the efforts of local artists. Whether you're seeking a hostess gift, stocking stuffer, or gift to go under the tree, your friends and relatives are gonna love these unique items!

Community News & Events

Attention residents of NE DC, Hyattsville, and Northern Prince George's County:

Community meeting tonight (11/6)

about the future of our neighborhood

including safety & parking at Community Forklift

The Peace Cross intersection is just a minute from Community Forklift.  Many of you drive past on your way to work or home, to shop at the 'Lift, or to play at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park.

Until last year, the Crossroads night club operated at that intersection, on the corner of Rt. 450 and Baltimore Ave.  The site has been empty since then, and local residents have been dreaming about a new use - a beautiful, pedestrian-friendly gateway to welcome folks to Prince George's County.

The Port Towns Community Development Corporation (Bladensburg, Edmonston, Colmar Manor, and Cottage City) and the Maryland National Capitol Parks and Planning Commission have long envisioned a mixed-use complex with family-friendly entertainment options, and a variety of restaurants & retailers.  A great project could be as beneficial as the new development in the Hyattsville/Rt. 1 corridor that includes Busboys and Poets, Elevation Burger, YES Market, etc.  And living units above the shops would even have a beautiful view of the Anacostia River and Waterfront Park.

The new owners of the site have now submitted a development plan.  They are proposing the "Beyond Restaurant and Dinner Theatre," a 4-story club to accommodate 1,157 patrons with 110 parking spots (and 327 parking spots off-site).

Please come to the community meeting on Thursday at 6pm to learn more about this project.  Issues that need to be discussed:

  • Crime and traffic associated with large nightclubs
  • Liquor license
  • Noise and nuisance issues
  • What type of entertainment will be provided on the theater stage(s)?
  • Lack of parking and overflow parking into the community
  • Adequate security of the premises and health and safety of patrons
  • Effect on and complement to the Bladensburg Waterfront Park recreational/environmental activities

Is a club/restaurant the appropriate usage of this site?  Does it complement our community's vision for neighborhood development and green economic development?

Please bring your ideas and experiences to the Bladensburg Town Hall this Thursday at 6pm (4229 Edmonston Road, Bladensburg, Maryland 20710).
