It's Earth Day,
and Community Forklift is busy
"Lifting up Communities" all around town!

Do you live in the DMV (DC, Maryland, or Virginia)?
Chances are, we'll be in your neighborhood
sometime in the next month!

The Outreach & Education team will have information booths at 20 community events and festivals in the next 4 weeks!  We'll be sharing info about Community Forklift and other recycling and reuse options.

Bring your friends by our booth and introduce them to your favorite thrift store for home improvement & architectural salvage!

Just don't bring donations of materials to our information booths, please!  Our education staff often travels by bike or metro, so they won't be able to haul your donations back to the warehouse.

Check out our calendar for details about each event!

Congratulations, Elizabeth!

WOW!!!!!

You never know who you're rubbing elbows with here at the Forklift.  The homeowner shopping in grubby sweatpants might also teach law at Georgetown.  The artist picking through lumber scraps might have a work of art in the Smithsonian.  And the woman ringing up your purchase might just have a Pulitzer.

Community Forklift was thrilled to discover that our own Elizabeth McGowan won this year's Pulitzer Prize for national reporting!!!!

InsideClimate News reporters
Elizabeth McGowan, Lisa Song and David Hasemyer won highest recognition for their work on

In 2010, more than a million gallons of oil spilled into the Kalamazoo River in central Michigan, and almost three years later the cleanup effort still drags on.  In this report Elizabeth and her team follow the story of riverside communities devastatingly impacted by the oil spill, and issue a clear warning against construction of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline.

A graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism, Elizabeth has worked for daily newspapers in Vermont and Wisconsin. Over the years she has written for a variety of publications including Nature Conservancy Magazine, E/The Environmental Magazine; Washingtonian magazine; Outdoor America; the journal Appalachia; and Crain Communications' Waste and Recycling News.  Elizabeth recently left InsideClimate News to write a book.

Lucky for us, she likes to relax by hiking, biking, and working as a Reuse Associate at Community Forklift.  She's also been contributing to our newsletter with fascinating profiles of Forklift Fans.

So we already knew that she's a fantastic writer and hard-working environmentalist.  We're glad that the Pulitzer folks recognized how amazing she is, too!  Congratulations, Elizabeth!

In addition, they advocate for a revitalized, local, and just food system; and partner with government, schools, other nonprofits, businesses, and the community.
