Meet some of our

Green Gift Fair Artists!

Ruth Meininger of abstractcolors
I love to paint using acrylics. I'm an abstract artist. Always have heads turning more than once at my pieces. I look everywhere and anywhere for my pieces to paint on. I've found wooden objects at thrift stores, yard sales, old scrapes laying around my parents house, the as is section at IKEA, and Community Forklift. Planting pots, rocks (big, medium, small) wooden coat rack, little wooden bird houses, outlet & light switch covers...anything everything!

Jill Yutan of Knitting Pretty
My green craft is repurposing old thrift store wool sweaters into fun new things such as toy blocks and animal-shaped pillows.  The sweaters are cut into pieces, washed and felted.  The custom designed patterns are cut out of the felted material and hand stitched together to create cute animal pillows and brightly colored toys.

Saralyn Salisbury of studiomaison

studiomaison transforms antique clay marbles into exquisite pieces of jewelry. Our pendants feature French antique clay marbles circa 1900. These delicate pieces hang on 18-inch gold fill chains and can be paired with additional studiomaison charms and pendants.

Cas Loll is a multi-platform artist who currently resides in Prince George's County. She works here at Community Forklift painting signs & decorating chalkboards in addition to working on the floor staff and being a Reuse Associate.  Her focus is in fine arts, specifically watercolors, but dabbles in many 2D and 3D mediums. During the Green Gift Fair Cas Loll will be selling fine art greeting cards and giclée prints of her paintings and designs. For a sneak peek at what is for sale or to look at work that is not yet offered in print visit her website (cas.lollworks.com).

Daryll Harris of PLaTEWeRKz

Designs are uniquely one of a kind, hand crafted pieces produced on a variety of metal wallplates, using a variety contrasting color and/or texture.  From wonderfully whimsical WeRKz, to natural & nuanced sublime finishes.  Each plate then goes through a 5-layer finishing process that permanently seals the design with one of three finishes: Liquid (high-gloss & shiny), Flat (smooth & sublime), or textured (rough, bumpy,  or layered surface).

Want to participate in the Gift Fair?
It's not too late!!

There are two ways to participate in our Green Gift Fair:

(1) You can come and exhibit your wares with no charge for the space any Saturday or Sunday in November and December (with approved application), or

Sad News

We are very sorry to report that we lost two friends in September.

PIC OF EVERETT SHOPPINGEverett Scrivner passed away on Sept. 30th.   He was a longtime Forklift customer & cheerleader. He found all sorts of thrifty, creative ways to reclaim and reuse, and we featured his home in our May 2012 newsletter. He could always be relied on in a pinch, and loved to welcome customers to the warehouse. Last year, he became an employee and began working on our Outreach & Education team (he was particularly proud that his efforts helped us win Best Hardware Store of 2012 in the City Paper). We will greatly miss his enthusiasm, friendship, and giving spirit.

There will be a memorial gathering this Saturday, Nov.3rd at 5:30pm at Shortcake Bakery at 4700 Rhode Island Avenue, Hyattsville, MD 20781. All are welcome to share stories and celebrate his life.  Donations are being collected for the care of his loved ones (Checks can be mailed to 4671 Tanglewood Drive, Edmonston MD 20781. Please make checks out to Community Forklift and write Everett's "Modern Family" in the memo line).

His obituary is posted on the Community Forklift blog.

****************************************************

 PIC OF PAUL

Paul Hughes was a leader in the local green jobs movement. He founded Deconstruction Services, which was the biggest supplier of reclaimed materials to Community Forklift in our early years. He then founded the ReBuild Warehouse, a much-needed reuse center in Northern Virginia.

We greatly appreciated his gregarious personality, his booming laugh, and his incredible dedication to his employees and the reuse industry.

From the folks at ReBuild: "We hope to keep his vision going and with the help of many of his devoted friends and followers, the ReBuild Warehouse will remain open. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations to the ReBuild Warehouse in Paul's memory will be greatly appreciated. You may donate online or send a contribution to the office at 8929 Colesbury Place, Fairfax, VA 22031." His obituary can be found here, and there are also tributes on the Annandale VA blog and DCmud.
