Weekly Quote

"If there is one thing which unites us all, it is our forgetting, our overlooking how much we have been loved.  For most of us, our biggest problem is not what we have done or not done...

but simply that we have not remembered with how great a love we have been loved."

Read the New Testament in 90 Days

Reading Began July 1
The Adult Education Committee invites you to join with others in our congregation in reading the New Testament in July, August and September.  Each daily reading will cover a couple of chapters and should take 15-30 minutes.  Book marks that guide the reading are available in the church office.  Fellowship Potlucks will be held at the end of each month to share experiences and offer orientation to the reading for the next month.

Minister's Message

Dear Friends,

For the next week in our Reading the New Testament in 90 days, we will be journeying through the gospel of Luke. "Journey" is an apt word to use to describe the movement of this wonderful gospel - my personal favorite.  The story begins and ends in Jerusalem and throughout the stories of his ministry, Jesus is on the move, teaching and healing - with the ultimate lesson about God's inclusive and unconditional love climaxing with the story of his death and resurrection.

Luke was likely written a decade or two after Mark.  It is the first of a two-volume work - Luke/Acts.  Luke's gospel tells of Jesus' mission to the Jewish people.  Acts describes the spread of Christianity into the Roman Empire and beyond.
We will read Acts at the end of the month and see then a continuation of the story as the Spirit moves through the Pentecost event and the establishment of the early church.

Luke's audience is Gentile Christians and his perspective is radically inclusive.  As Eugene Peterson points out, "Luke is a most vigorous champion of the outsider.  An outsider himself, the only Gentile in an all-Jewish cast of New Testament writers, he shows how Jesus includes those who typically were treated as outsiders by the religious establishment of the day; women, common laborers, the racially different, the poor.  He will not countenance religion as a club."1

A hallmark of Luke's theology is the emphasis on the Spirit of God.  The presence of the Spirit appears in the other gospels but not like in Luke. (Note how many people are "filled with the Spirit" in this gospel.) The Spirit is present at every pivotal moment in the story, i.e. baptism, start of ministry, Jesus' dying words, and the resurrection promises.  In all
three synoptic gospels, Jesus begins his ministry by reading Hebrew scripture in the synagogue on the Sabbath.  But, only in Luke is the scripture deliberately quoted and this passage from Isaiah, offers a portrait of Luke's Jesus and his mission to be the savior to the whole world.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.  He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed
and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. 2

In worship this Sunday, the scripture that will guide our worship is from Paul's letter to the Colossians 1:1-14 and the sermon title is "Empowered by the Past."

See you Sunday, Martha
