Minister's Message

Dear Friends,

For those of you who are reading the New Testament in 90 days, you are half way through the Gospel of Matthew.  As we "take off" on this summer reading journey, I thought I would share some background information on the books and letters we are reading.  Most of the 27 documents that make up the New Testament were written between 50 CE (Common Era) and the end of the first century, though some were written later.  Relative to the Old Testament, which was written over a period of 800 years and is the teaching and history of an entire nation, the New Testament was written for an oppressed minority of only several thousand people and it was written over a short span of about 100 years.  All of the New Testament documents were written to persons or communities that were known to the authors, though many of those authors remain unknown to history.   The New Testament is made up of letters (21), gospels (4), an apocalypse (Revelation) and a history of the early church (Acts).

All four gospels are the records of the stories of the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus.  They are of first importance in the New Testament because they contain the good news of God's saving love in Jesus Christ.  These are the foundational documents for Christians.  Jesus lived in the first third of the first century.  The gospels were written in the last third of that century roughly between 65 and 100 CE. Mark is considered to be earliest record because it is the shortest and appears to be foundational to Matthew and Mark. John was probably the latest.  Though wonderful names appear as the titles of each gospel, biblical scholarship does not know for sure who wrote them.   Names were not assigned to these books until the second century. Matthew, Mark and Luke are most similar and tell many of the same stories.  For that reason, they are called the "synoptic gospels." Synoptic means, "to see with the same eye."  These books have written sources in common.   We will notice in our reading that Matthew and Luke both used the stories and structure of Mark.  Matthew and Luke also share other material that does not appear in Mark.  The gospel of John is dramatically different than the synoptics and is unique in its structure, style, content and theology.

A few quick words about Matthew and Mark and I will pick up the others as we go along.  Mark was written around 70 CE, the year the Temple of Jerusalem was destroyed by the forces of the Roman Empire.  This pivotal event casts a shadow over this gospel as seen in its emphasis on the end time.  The thirteenth chapter of Mark is referred to as "a little apocalypse." It tells a story of hope and redemption to a people who are suffering.  As the earliest gospel and closest to Jesus' actual days on earth, their expectation for an imminent second coming of Christ is high.  These people believed that "the time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand."  The strong message in Mark is "to prepare the way of the Lord."

Matthew was written 10-20 years later than Mark and the writing is rich in allusions to writings in the Hebrew scripture. This suggests that this community was made up of Christian Jews who were in conflict with other Jews.   After the destruction of the Temple, the Jewish community once again had the task of preserving their religious and cultural identity.  The established Jewish community was at odds with Jews who followed Jesus as the messiah, claiming they were no longer Jews. Matthew's interest in writing this gospel was to support the belief that Jesus was the fulfillment of the Hebrew prophecy and that Christian Jews were being faithful to their Hebrew tradition.  Watch for the echoes of Old Testament metaphor and story in Matthew's stories about Jesus.

We gather for worship this Sunday and will share in the sacrament of Holy Communion.  The text for the sermon this week is Luke 10:25-37 - the story of the Good Samaritan.   The title of the sermon is "One Good Thing Leads to Another."

I look forward to seeing you, Martha

Ubuntu Day of Service

On the Ubuntu Day of Service this month, we will be singing at the Aviara Healthcare Center on Sunday, July 14, at 3:00.  Once a month we will gather to do a service project in the spirit of Ubuntu, a Zulu word meaning that my humanity is inextricably linked to yours.  A person with ubuntu is welcoming, hospitable, warm and generous, willing to share our humanity.  Aviara is located at 944 Regal Road in Encinitas, 92024.  Plan to join us as we raise our voices in song to lift the spirits of our neighbors.  Children are welcome.
