Minister's Message

Dear Friends,

This Sunday we will celebrate the culmination of our three-year capital campaign, From Strength to Strength.  During worship, we'll hear a final report from campaign leader, Rodney Lappe, about the success of the campaign and its financial impact on the future of our church.  Between services, join us in Founders Hall for a catered breakfast and informal conversations as we cross the campaign finish-line and celebrate our achievements.

Sunday will also feature a musical performance by the children who participated in our highly successful Vacation Bible School this week.  We are grateful for the leadership of Chelsea Simon and for the dozens of youth and adult volunteers who shared their time and talents throughout this exciting week.

Finally, we will welcome several new friends into the membership of the church and celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism at the 9:00 am service.  Please take a moment to meet our new members and to show your support and care for them as they begin this new journey in our congregation.

Following this Sunday, I will begin my Renewal Leave.  I'm grateful for your support and prayers while I am away over these next eight weeks.  I'm looking forward to traveling with my family, reading extensively, and riding my bike. Rev. Martha Wingfield will be responsible for all pastoral duties during my absence.  Please let her know how much her leadership is appreciated this summer.

See you Sunday!

Rev. Mark

This Week

Read the New Testament in 90 Days

Reading Begins July 1
The Adult Education Committee invites you to join with others in our congregation in reading the New Testament in July, August and September. Each daily reading will cover a couple of chapters and should take 15-30 minutes.  Book marks that guide the reading will be available at the Adult Education table during coffee hour beginning June 16.  Fellowship Potlucks will be held at the end of each month to share experiences and offer orientation to the reading for the next month.

Jubilee Stands Up for Student Debt Justice

On July 1, student loan interest rates are set to double for almost seven million college students unless Congress takes action.  High-interest rates increase debts making them unpayable and preventing our communities from recovering in these hard economic times.  These rate increases will harm the affordability and accessibility to education for students around the country.  We must support young people here in the United States to develop into their full potential and prevent them from being stuck in cycles of debt.  Come to the Jubilee table in Founders Hall between services to sign a petition to Congress and to receive a prayer for student debt and justice.
Caregiver Support Group
cross and heartCaregiver Support Group will meet on Tuesday, July 2 at 12:00 pm, in the Conference Room.  New persons are always welcome.  Questions or concerns please call Phyllis Castiglione at  858.759.1552.

"Share the Table Sunday" refers to the opportunity for us to extend the message of God's love by reaching out in tangible ways to help our brothers and sisters in Christ. "Share the Table Sunday" is on the first Sunday of every month to coincide with communion. NEXT Sunday please bring nonperishable food items for the Community Resource Center (CRC) food bank and place them on the table in the narthex. For a list of "Top Food Needs" click here.  Thank you for caring for those in need in our local community.

A Big Thank You
A Big Thank You! To all the many members of the choir and congregation who hosted Marilou Kratzenstein, our outstanding organist, on Thursday nights since last September.  Marilou lives in San Diego, but practices here on Thursdays with Bill Hatcher and the choir, and again on Friday. Our generous host families: the Berriers, Ellisors, Fitzpatricks, Ginavens, Rich Johnsons, Judy Gezon, Carolyn Sechrist, and Donna Johnson all  opened their homes and hearts so that Marilou could spend the night and avoid the long drive and also have the opportunity to know her new church family a little better.  Bravo! to you all for your Generosity!

Concert DVDs For Purchase
DVDs are available for purchase of the Creation Concert and the Thomas Mellon organ concert.  The suggested donation is $5 for CREATION and $2 for Thomas Mellon concert.  Please sign up in the church office at the reception desk if you would like to order a copy.

Communications Coordinator

Mindy Scher, SDUMC's Communications Coordinator for more than four years, will be stepping down from her position on July 5 after accepting full-time employment with Xtend Healthcare.  This is a wonderful opportunity for Mindy and her family.  Please join us in congratulating Mindy and showing our appreciation for her hard work and dedication to SDUMC.

Visualizing Social Justice Photography Exhibition

Keep Donating Your Pesky Pennies!

Pesky PenniesWe are supporting Camp Encinal in the Northwest Conference of the Mexican Methodist Church.  Located just 13 miles east of Tecate, the camp and retreat center has six cabins with 12 beds each, restrooms, showers, and a dining hall, thanks to our continuing contributions.  We are now supporting the building of a chapel, so please deposit those pesky pennies (and all manner of coins and paper money) into the container, which is located near the coffee, between services.  Thank you for your generosity!

Electronic Giving

Electronic Giving logoElectronic Giving is an efficient and convenient way to make your weekly, monthly, annual, or special offering.  Many of our members and friends choose to make their offering this way, rather than by traditional means (the offering plate) on Sunday morning.  If electronic giving is a more attractive and convenient method of giving for you, please visit the church website at http://encinitaschurch.com/about-us/giving/, and follow the instructions.  If you need assistance, please contact the church office.

Chancel Flowers for 2013

Chancel Flowers for 2013 are still available.  If you would like to honor a loved one by donating flowers to beautify the chancel for worship, please fill in your information on the chart in the church office, and fill out the form located next to the chart and put in the Secretary's box.  The requested donation is $40.  You may also sign up by contacting the Church Secretary, Alma Rodriguez, at secretary@encinitaschurch.com.  Many opportunities remain for the 2013 calendar year!
