| Minister's Message | |
Dear Friends,
Several years ago Alain de Botton wrote a book titled, Status Anxiety, in which he describes the two universal needs of every human being: the need to love (intimacy), and the need to be loved by the world (approval). Botton suggests that it's this second need - our life-long quest for love from the world - that is often more intense than the first. We care too much about what others think of us, about whether we're judged a success or a failure, a winner or a loser. Our own sense of happiness is dependent upon the perceptions that others have made about us. This quest for affirmation leads to what Botton calls "status anxiety."
Status anxiety plagued the early Christian church. Jewish culture was organized around very clear social, religious, and economic boundaries. Those ancient boundaries seeped into the culture of the Christian church: Jews were more highly regarded than Gentiles; men were honored over women; free persons ranked higher than slaves. The early church started looking a lot like a religious country club. Many who desired to be included in the church were prevented from participating.
When the Apostle Paul heard about this, he was livid. One of the most radical statements Paul ever made is found in this week's text from Galatians 3, where he writes, "There is no longer Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female: for all of you are in Christ Jesus."
The radical message of Christianity is that in Jesus Christ all the boundaries we employ to define rank and privilege and keep other people in place, all the structures by which society defines who is in and who is out, have been destroyed. We live in a family in which there are no distinctions, in which each is dignified-not by race, gender, or wealth-but by God's boundless love shown in Jesus Christ.
God meant for this kind of boundless love to be the antidote to our status anxiety. Finally, we can stop trying so hard, and climbing so high, and grasping so tightly. Finally, we can rest in God's care, like children-content and thankful to be adopted.
See you Sunday,
Rev. Mark |

Jubilee Stands Up for Student Debt Justice
On July 1, student loan interest rates are set to double for almost seven million college students unless Congress takes action. High-interest rates increase debts making them unpayable and preventing our communities from recovering in these hard economic times. These rate increases will harm the affordability and accessibility to education for students around the country. We must support young people here in the United States to develop into their full potential and prevent them from being stuck in cycles of debt. Come to the Jubilee table in Founders Hall between services to sign a petition to Congress and to receive a prayer for student debt and justice. |
|
Read the New Testament in 90 Days

Book marks that guide the reading will be available at the Adult Education table during coffee hour beginning June 16. Fellowship Potlucks will be held at the end of each month to share experiences and offer orientation to the reading for the next month. |

| Keep Donating Your Pesky Pennies! | |
We are supporting Camp Encinal in the Northwest Conference of the Mexican Methodist Church. Located just 13 miles east of Tecate, the camp and retreat center has six cabins with 12 beds each, restrooms, showers, and a dining hall, thanks to our continuing contributions. We are now supporting the building of a chapel, so please deposit those pesky pennies (and all manner of coins and paper money) into the container, which is located near the coffee, between services. Thank you for your generosity!

| Electronic Giving | | |
Electronic Giving is an efficient and convenient way to make your weekly, monthly, annual, or special offering. Many of our members and friends choose to make their offering this way, rather than by traditional means (the offering plate) on Sunday morning. If electronic giving is a more attractive and convenient method of giving for you, please visit the church website at http://encinitaschurch.com/about-us/giving/, and follow the instructions. If you need assistance, please contact the church office.
