| Minister's Message | |
Dear Friends,
Sometimes one of our greatest problems as people of faith is that, when we ask ourselves what Jesus would do in this situation or that, or how Jesus would want us to respond to this need or to that person, we often tend to think too big. We aim a little too high. We may find ourselves praying for a miracle, or asking God to help us do something that would otherwise be beyond our natural abilities. We may think of great sacrifices that are required, only to count the cost and pull back. We may dream up extraordinary measures, only to get stuck in the details.
Sometimes we aim too high and are overwhelmed by the task. Before we know it, we come to the conclusion that there's nothing much we can really do, and so we excuse ourselves from doing anything at all. By our lofty ideals we have limited our potential to be useful. In the end, the person we wanted to help, or the problem we wanted to help resolve, is no longer our responsibility.
Luke tells the story of the day Jesus performed a miracle in the village of Nain-raising back to life a man who had died, and returning him to his widowed mother. But according to Luke, that miracle was not the main event that day. The whole story turned on that one moment when, as Luke says, Jesus looked on the widow and had compassion for her.
Most of the time, we suffer not from a lack of ability or a shortage of good intentions, but from a lack of compassion. Genuine compassion always gives rise to imaginative solutions. Love finds a way.
See you Sunday,
Rev. Mark |

Guatemala Project Information/Organization Meeting
Tuesday, June 11, at 6:30 p.m. in Rooms 9/10.
The Missions and Social Action Committee is proposing that we form a group to go to Guatemala in February 2014. Come to the meeting to learn more and hear Carol Conger-Cross, project director, speak and show slides of the area, people, and work we will do. Our organist, Marilou Kratzenstein, will share about her recent experience there. If February does not fit your schedule, there is an additional opportunity to go in July 2014. For more information or if you are interested and cannot attend the meeting, contact Mary Ann Jones, 760.436.0658 or majones15@cox.net. Go to http://guatemalaproject.org for additional information. Think about this quote from the website. "Putting stoves into people's homes gives us an opportunity to take you into places where no tourist can travel. Not just to see how others live, but to experience life changing moments of transformation. Experiencing and sharing of God's spirit needs few words at times like this." |

June 17, 7:00 p.m., in the Lounge
The Missions and Social Action Committee is sponsoring monthly Desserts and DVDs in the Lounge starting Monday evening, June 17, at 7:00 p.m. The first showing will be Indoctrinated: The Grooming of Our Children into Prostitution, a 33 minute DVD put out by the San Diego County Office of Education. It is a powerful film that illustrates the reality behind the commercial sexual exploitation of youth in San Diego County. This film is appropriate for middle school and high school youth, their parents, and all of us who need to be aware of the human trafficking that is taking place right in our own neighborhoods. | What's Behind the Wall?
Founders Hall, June 9
Thank you to our supporters who have already purchased a brick! To date we have raised $2,281.00. Sierra Service Project is an amazing experience for our youth. Each year they have an opportunity to go somewhere new and serve God through various building projects. The work is important, but it's what's behind the work that matters most. The youth are helping those in need. They are loving God and loving others. It's this love in action that makes SSP so special. Our fundraising continues this week. Please stop by the display located in Founders Hall to purchase a brick ranging in price from $1.00 - $100.00. Each brick purchased will reveal "What's Behind the Wall?" and will showcase the reason we go to SSP. |
| Keep Donating Your Pesky Pennies! | |
We are supporting Camp Encinal in the Northwest Conference of the Mexican Methodist Church. Located just 13 miles east of Tecate, the camp and retreat center has six cabins with 12 beds each, restrooms, showers, and a dining hall, thanks to our continuing contributions. We are now supporting the building of a chapel, so please deposit those pesky pennies (and all manner of coins and paper money) into the container, which is located near the coffee, between services. Thank you for your generosity!
|
| Electronic Giving | | |
Electronic Giving is an efficient and convenient way to make your weekly, monthly, annual, or special offering. Many of our members and friends choose to make their offering this way, rather than by traditional means (the offering plate) on Sunday morning. If electronic giving is a more attractive and convenient method of giving for you, please visit the church website at http://encinitaschurch.com/about-us/giving/, and follow the instructions. If you need assistance, please contact the church office.
