Family Devotional:
Reading the Bible Together

Do you know it from memory yet? Say or read 1 John 3:1 and 1 John 4:16
"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him." ~ 1 John 3:1
"And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them." ~ 1 John 4:16
Consider This
Sometime things happen that we don't want to happen. It feels as if rain is pouring down on us. Maybe we are worried or afraid. Maybe we feel upset about
something that happened at school or work. Maybe a job was lost, or there was a car accident.
God's love for us is like an umbrella of in these storms. It does not keep the storms from coming into our lives. But, like an umbrella, God's love shields us as we walk through the storm because we know that God is with us. We are not alone.
Under God's umbrella of love, we don't have to hide until the storm goes away. We know that God will help us make it through the day each day. We can trust that God's love is with us and that someday the storm will end and the sun will shine again.
Sharing Together
You may want to go outside for this activity. Take your umbrella, raise it, and pass it from one family member to another. As members hold the open umbrella, they can share a time when they felt God's umbrella of love during a stormy time of life.
Practicing What Jesus Taught
Think of someone with whom you can share the umbrella of God's love today. Mention that person's name during the prayer below.
Praying Together
Let one person read each phrase below and all others repeat it.
Thank you, Lord God,
for your umbrella of love
on stormy days.
Help me today
to share that umbrella
with others who need it.
We pray for...
(each family member names the person they identified earlier)
Amen.
Please always feel free to email, call or stop by my office if you have questions, comments, suggestions or you just want to say hello.
Peace,
Chelsea
