THE LATEST IN P2P FUNDRAISING NEWS
April 2016
IN THIS ISSUE:

Greetings!

Because do-it-yourself P2P fundraising is relatively new, the playbook for recruiting and retaining independent fundraisers is still being written.

But some best practices are starting to emerge.

Mike Kirkpatrick, director of marketing at the Canadian Cancer Society's Ontario Division and architect of its highly successful Cancer Fighters DIY campaign, recently outlined three keys to building a successful DIY program:
  • Be Visible: Nonprofits with successful DIY campaigns must work to build a high level of awareness, so that it is top of mind when fundraisers are thinking about their cause. They should also invest heavily in search engine optimization and Google ads to make sure they are easy to find, Kirkpatrick says.
  • Keep it Simple: "It's important to avoid getting too complicated with the amount of information," he says. "Ultimately, you're trying to tap into the basic mechanics of getting involved."
  • Stay Engaged: Don't rely on your website to provide all of the information. Devote resources to making sure you provide personal attention to fundraisers. "You want to have that live connection," Kirkpatrick says.
Check out our recent interview with Kirkpatrick for more advice on building a successful DIY program.

Best,

Unicycle Mountain Ride

We've seen people ride unicycles for charity. We've seen people mountain bike for charity. But, until now, we've never seen anyone crazy enough to try to ride a unicycle down a mountain.

PipeBand-a-Thon

You can't go wrong when you combine kilts, bagpipes, and charity. These guys played their pipes for 12 straight hours to raise money.

Corporate Gift Matching - A P2P Secret Weapon

The majority of Fortune 500 companies now offer employee gift matching as part of their corporate social responsibility programs. It's exciting to see how many employers are matching donations to charitable organizations ... often dollar-for-dollar!

Corporate gift matching is a rising trend, but the potential of these programs is too frequently overlooked by peer-to-peer or community fundraising managers.

In a run, walk, cycle (or challenge!) event, donors are pledging to support a loved one or friend. Corporate gift matching is a fantastic way to immediately expand the impact of those one-time pledges from donors who are new to your cause.

Donor psychology also comes into play in a big way when your messaging includes corporate gift matching. Research shows that just mentioning the possibility of corporate matching on an online donation form can increase the average gift size by 51%!
Don't leave money on the table.
