Greetings!
Sydney Van Horn has learned a valuable lesson about college students as she has built the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation's highly successful UP 4 THE FIGHT dance marathon series. They ask a LOT of questions."In the beginning, I was not prepared for the amount of deep questions I received," Van Horn said in a recent interview . "But over time, I realized what they were looking for: personal stories, personal experiences, innovative and interactive activities and data, and other ways to connect with a cause that is so far removed."When you think about it, college kids aren't that much different than other P2P fundraisers. They want to know that when they ask their friends to donate that the money will help make a difference. It's up to us, as P2P professionals, to show that impact in real and tangible ways. You can learn more about how Van Horn is showing that impact through UP 4 THE FIGHT during a live webinar on September 29 at 3 p.m. ET.

For many participants, simply showing up for an event is enough to prove their dedication to a cause. But more organizations are focusing efforts on getting people to donate in addition to participating in an activity. And, recent studies, like the 2014 Blackbaud Peer-to-Peer Fundraising Study, show that donors make better fundraisers.
Here are some easy things you can do to encourage your program participants to make donations:
- Don't use terms like "self donation," "self gift," or "self pledge." Outside of the world of professional fundraising, people don't readily understand these words. Try: "Be the first to make a donation and show how important it is to protect our rivers!"
- Design your event registration process so that the donation step is less of an option and more of an inherent part of the process. Try: "I can't wait to do the Run to Save Sea Lions in October! In the meantime, I want to protect them NOW by giving $___!"
- Be transparent about your registration fee. Is your fee a barrier to entry that needs to be discounted or waived? Or, is it there to help defray event costs so that more money raised can go to your cause? Try: Your registration fee gets you to the start line, but your donation gets us one step closer to a cure.
