Quick show of hands: How many of you are reading this message on your cellphone?
I bet about half of you are holding up one hand while trying to scroll through this email with your other. That's not a wild guess - it's actually based on our own traffic numbers, as well as a new study, which shows that 49 percent of emails across the web were read on mobile devices in December.
For peer-to-peer fundraisers like Noel Beebe, this is an important statistic. Noel, associate director of constituent events for the Alzheimer's Association, says her organization has been investing heavily in developing a responsive web presence, meaning that all of its messages and fundraising pages can recognize when they are being accessed on a mobile device and display information that is customized for use on that device.
"Mobile is continuing to change the way people consume information," she says. "Organizations that don't invest in mobile are going to fall behind."
A study by the fundraising software company Blackbaud reinforces that message. The company found that nearly 1 out of every 5 event registrations are coming from phones or tablets. That's a big percentage - and it stands to reason that groups that have developed responsive websites and are creating messages that are aimed at mobile users are getting an even bigger share.
This is an important shift in the way people are registering for our events. How is your organization staying in front of this trend?
