Online badges, handwritten notes and logoed jackets are common ways we recognize volunteers. Increasingly groups are developing uncommon ways to honor peer-to-peer fundraisers who go above and beyond.
St. Baldrick's Foundation - which has enlisted nearly 450,000 people to shave their heads to raise money for research into childhood cancers - invokes the spirit of Camelot.
Fundraisers who take it all off the top for seven straight years are inducted into the "Knights of the Bald Table." To date, more than 2,100 volunteers (who've collectively raised $20.6 million) have been knighted during often emotional ceremonies. Many participants set knighthood as a goal as their passion for the cause grows.
St. Baldrick's has found that developing a ritual to honor its volunteers can yield powerful results and help weave strong ties between the organization and its supporters.
"Volunteers that get knighted are beyond excited! Reactions range from excitement, pride, and even tears," says Joanna Baumgarten, St. Baldrick's director of fundraising. "As the program has grown, more people are aware of it, and now it's become something people aspire to."

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

 Focus on:Field Staff
As the group on the front lines, your field staff are some of the most important people at your organization. Often times, they may be the only employees your constituents ever meet. When evaluating your fundraising strategy, it is important to consider how well you are supporting and managing your team on the ground. In working and talking with field staff from many organizations, three key themes surfaced:
-
Recognition works
-
Your team needs a leader, not a friend
-
Your seasoned staff may be over seasoned
We don't mean to tease. For full commentary on these themes and what they may mean to you and your program, click here.
