THE LATEST IN PEER-TO-PEER FUNDRAISING NEWS

Happy September! In this issue, enjoy:

The Ice Bucket Challenge is getting all of us to think about new and different ways of engaging supporters in peer-to-peer activity. The program not only raised more than $100 million fight ALS, but it also dramatically raised awareness of a previously obscure disease.

The winners of the British Institute of Fundraising's 2014 National Awards further illustrate this point. Two particularly outstanding examples:
  • Go Sober attracted young men to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, an organization with a supporter base dominated by women 50+.   The event, in which participants pledge to give up alcohol for the month of October and ask their friends and family to sponsor them for doing so, raised £2.3 million from 31,000 new donors -- in its first year!
  •  Citizen Science used peer-to-peer concepts to engage hundreds of thousands of people in online activity that fueled valuable cancer research -- and attracted substantial corporate sponsorship. This collaboration between fundraisers, technology experts and Cancer Research UK scientists was built around two online 'games' - Cell Slider and Genes in Space. In playing the games, 375,000 citizen scientists from 190 countries classified breast-cancer cell samples and analyzed genetic data. This was not just "make work" -- the volunteer efforts produced accurate results six times faster than traditional methods.
Is your organization using peer-to-peer to broaden its appeal or achieve "money plus" objectives? Or do you admire a group that has?

Share smart examples of 'new wave' peer-to-peer efforts with us on our Pinterest board or on Facebook. Do so by September 22nd and you'll be entered into a drawing for a pair of movie tickets (goodness knows you deserve a night out!)

The YMCA of Austin Case Study: Pairing Peer-to-Peer & Crowdfunding
to Optimize Participation and Results

Wednesday, September 17 at 2:00 pm EDT

Online campaigns are recruiting many new donors and supporters who in turn can spread your mission across more communities and continents. But with the advent of "crowdfunding," nonprofits are losing control of the fundraising message. Many commercial side platforms now allow people to raise money for projects, personal trips and even medical bills. And, due to the proliferation of platforms and approaches, nonprofits increasingly have little visibility into who is fundraising on their behalf, where and how, thus preventing them from building the deeper donor relationships that provide ongoing support.

So how do nonprofits take back "fundraising" in the crowd? Megan Arnold, development, The YMCA of Austin - Metro Office, has figured out how to combine the power of crowdfunding and peer-to-peer fundraising for optimum results.

In this real life case study of the YMCA's successful annual-fund peer-to-peer crowdfunding campaign, Megan and Miriam Kagan, senior fundraising principal at Kimbia, will cover the:

  1. Challenges of the crowdfunding free-for-all
  2. Functionality, message, reach and data that nonprofits must provide to grab their supporters' attention
  3. Best practices for creating a successful nonprofit-driven crowdfunding campaign
  4. Proven practices related to the "rights" of nonprofits to crowdfund in a way that enables their supporters while keeping the nonprofit in the driver seat

Tuesday, October 21 at 3:00 pm ET

Since its launch in 2008, Climate Ride has rallied more than 850 riders who have collectively pedaled more than 351,000 miles, generating more than $1.5 million for sustainability and bike advocacy organizations. Join Climate Ride's Andrew Valainis and DonorDrive's Andrea Frieder to hear how Climate Ride has successfully automated key communication to free up staff time to focus on supporting participants.

In this webinar, you'll learn:

  • How automatic emails from fundraising software can alert staff when to encourage and when to congratulate fundraisers
  • How special recognition and prizes can turn hardcore riders into hardcore fundraisers
  • How letting the software do much of the heavy lifting frees staff to focus on helping participants have the experience of a lifetime

RECRUITING MILLENNIALS

Generation Y, or the Millennials, are an important segment to recruit for your peer-to-peer event. Here are some tips to help you improve your recruitment (and retention) of this essential group provided by Matthew Mielcarek, VP Consulting & Strategy for Charity Dynamics.

  1. Keep it social: Of course by this we mean share your event on social media, but also ensure that your event is a fun and social experience for participants.
  2. Mobile Accessibility: Your Millennial participants will want to access the event's information and fundraising capabilities on a mobile device, make sure that your website, emails, registration forms and participant centers are all responsive.
  3. Say Thanks: This goes for any generation, but appreciation seems to go a long way with Gen Y. Sending a 'thank you' email after the event and posting on social media can really make a difference.
