The late, great poet Maya Angelou once told a graduating class: 

"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." 

 

Angelou's insight certainly rings true in the world of peer-to-peer fundraising.   The greats in our field not only master technical aspects of the business -- they understand the importance of creating memorable emotional moments from the time someone signs up through event day and beyond.

 

Generating joy, warmth and, yes, sometimes tears through personal touch, cheerleading, sharing mission moments, and creating team spirit is often what leads participants to go above and beyond and return year after year.

 

That is why each month we provide you with a combination of the practical (in the form of how to tips) and the inspirational via our monthly Peer-to-Peer Spotlight, a feature on what makes program leaders tick.  This month we talk with Todd Setter, who regularly motivates people to run - in their underwear - to raise awareness and funds for colon cancer.

Email Marketing Tips from

Struggling to get traction with your emails? Wondering what you can do to make your efforts sing? Check out some tips from Mandy O'Neill chief strategist and founder,ConnectedNonprofit.

 

Q: How can I increase open rates on my emails?

 

Three things:

  1. Relevant, consistent messaging segmented to your audience based on interest, or geography, or online behavior
  2. A really compelling subject line or 'promise' for opening the email
  3. Your 'From' needs to be from a recognizable human in your organization, not the organization name

That said, actual conversation is the better metric to watch and improve. How many people are acting once they open? That's the true measure of a great email campaign.

A huge Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum high five to Kelly Hohl, online producer, The Humane Society of the United States, for this great idea.

 

When designing a new peer-to-peer fundraising site or considering site upgrades, it can be helpful to gather examples of features you admire from other programs. 

 

Take screenshots of particular online elements and combine them into monstrous design mock-ups, affectionately called "Frankenpages," for presentation to your design and web development teams. Even if some elements or functions are lost along the way, you can still refer back to the Frankenpages when thinking about your next round of updates. 

 

Here's an example with inspiration from Cancer Council NSW, charity: water and International Rescue Committee:

Ironman Foundation in Partnership to Provide Critical, Life-Saving Equipment

The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation and The Ironman Foundation  have partnered to provide $100,000 in grant funding for first responder groups in seven communities where Ironman races will take place. The grants awarded will be for the purchase of critical, life-saving equipment, and will be distributed at Ironman events taking place between August and November 2014. Read More 





Online Fundraising Goes Mainstream - Chronicle of Philanthropy Survey

Online giving is still growing, but triple-digit annual increases are a thing of the past.
