December 2013

LOOKING BACK.
AND LOOKING FORWARD.

For many you, December is the time of end-of-year appeals and planning for the new year.

For our team, it's time to collect data for the Run Walk Ride Thirty in order to assess and draw lessons from the past year.

Our initial homework reveals some amazing activity -- especially because we've broadened our horizons to capture even more forms of peer-to-peer fundraising. Although 2013 was very challenging for some programs, there will be new players in the top thirty that experienced dramatic growth such as Cycle for Survival, the spinning series supporting Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center which topped $14 million in gross revenue.

Your participation is crucial to make the Run Walk Ride Thirty a valuable benchmark, so if you haven't sent in your survey yet, now's the time!

We'll premiere the results at RWR2014. We hope you'll join us at our annual conference, February 25 & 26 in Atlanta to learn from each other and expert speakers . Early bird pricing ends January 8 so sign up now if you have 2013 dollars left or right away in 2014 to get the lowest price.

Best wishes to you, your colleagues and your families.

WebinarINVOLVING MILLENNIALS
IN YOUR RUN, RACE, OR WALK
January 14, 2014 at 1:30 pm ET

In the United States there are more than 80 million people between the ages of 20-30. This generation, Millennials, spend more than $300 billion each year in consumer discretionary goods. What does that mean for your run/race/walk?  There is opportunity to involve them to raise money and spread the word about your cause.  The latest Millennial Impact Report released data about this generation's involvement and there is exciting news - 63% of Millennials have raised money for a run/race/walk.

Hear from Derrick Feldmann, lead researcher of the Millennial Impact Project, about the generation and how they are connecting with causes, fundraising, and using run/race/walks as an outlet to engage their peers. Amanda Napolitano, Executive Director of 26.2 with Donna Foundation, will also speak about her organization's involvement with this generation and some tips and tactics to get them involved.

Does your program provide cotton or technical t-shirts to participants? We're looking into how peer-to-peer fundraising programs make use of such apparel. We'd love to hear from you!

The first 24 people to answer this quick survey will receive a cool sling bag and super soft, cushioning athletic socks along with our thanks!

NewsPEER-TO-PEER FUNDRAISING NEWS
  • So many aspiring runners have applied to the 2014 Boston Marathon's 138 official charities that winning a bib may be harder than running the race. The heightened interest has prompted many charities to ask runners to raise more than the $4,000 and $5,000 fund-raising minimums set by the Boston Athletic Association and sponsor John Hancock. (Click here to read more)
  • The Navigators Group, Inc. announced a five-year partnership with Connecticut nonprofit Kids in Crisis, in which it will become the title sponsor of the newly-named Navigators Stamford KIC IT Triathlon. (Click here to read the press release)

TipFUNDRAISING STRATEGY OF THE MONTH

More than 30% of all charitable donations are made in the month of December with  December 31st being the most generous day of the year.   Use this data to recruit participants to register for your 2014 events early so they can kick off their fundraising before year end. Once registered, coach and incentivize them to fundraise the last few days of December when giving is most beneficial to the donor.
