Greetings!

"If you build it, they will come" may have been true about the baseball diamond in the classic film "Field of Dreams," but any thon fundraising program manager who fails to aggressively court participants is asking for trouble.

In a recent Run Walk Ride webinar, the American Diabetes Association's Shana Masterson noted the importance of making communication personal and relevant for participants - to cut through the clutter and keep them engaged with your event.

In reading a new eGuide published by Event 360, "7 Event Participant Recruitment Myths," it struck me that while while our industry landscape may change, our participants are not just data points, but people. They will respond, participate and support our causes if we:
  • Take the time to understand what motivates them
  • Help them understand what we're doing to further our cause and their role in it
  • Personalize their experience

Atttracting high value participants may not be easy, but with the right combination of "hi tech" and "hi touch" you can get the job done.
