Greetings!

Following last week's shocking events in Boston our hearts and prayers go out to the victims, those who lost their lives, those who lost loved ones and those whose lives will be changed forever.

Boston SkylineThe explosions occurred when many charity runners were nearing the finish line. This year more than 2,300 people officially ran Boston to raise money for more than 130 charities.  In 2012 official charity runners raised about $17 million. Many of Boston's charity runners are vowing not to let the horrific events deter them from future Boston Marathons

Many endurance fundraising program leaders spent the first hours following the explosions frantically locating participants and alumni of their events. Most are taking a close look at their own events to ensure that security is a priority and that participants are reassured.

Naturally, runners who had trained for Boston were disappointed that they could not cross the finish the line, but for many charity runners the race itself is a "bonus", shared Craig Comins of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America.

In any case, commented Craig, "We are a tough lot here in Boston and we will perservere. Next year's marathon will be quite a sight."

Peer-to-Peer Fundraising: How Do You Measure Up?

Light bulb Peer to peer fundraising events like runs, walks and rides have become a staple for nonprofit fundraisers, and often bring in more revenue than any other fundraising campaign throughout the year. But how do you know if the event you're planning for your organization stacks up against other similar events?

Each year Blackbaud publishes a Peer to Peer Fundraising Benchmark report with information about trends and best practices in event fundraising. Here are some of the key findings from the 2013 Benchmark report:
  • Email traffic decreased in every event type, as much as 16 percent. Are you employing a mulit-channel strategy to reach participants to make sure that they have the information they need to raise money for your cause?
  • The average online gift increased in every event type from between 2 and 6 percent. How are you optimizing your donation forms to increase your online gift average?
  • Returning participants still raise more than new participants. What is your retention plan and how is it different than your recruitment plan?
  • Third Party Events outperform all traditional events and in some cases participants raised four times more than traditional events. Do you provide online resources for your constituents to create their own fundraising events?

  • Solidarity runs and other fundraisers to benefit those affected by events in Boston popped up across the country. The Huffington Post covered some of the efforts organized by college students. (Click here for the full article)
  • Immediately after the explosions in Boston, social media channels lit up as people shared information and tried to track down loved ones. In short order, channels like Twitter and Facebook have shifted to raise awareness and money for victims of the bombings. In one interesting example, Joe Waters, of Selfishgiving.com is using Pinterest to highlight giving opportunities.
