Greetings!
Following last week's shocking events in Boston our hearts and prayers go out to the victims, those who lost their lives, those who lost loved ones and those whose lives will be changed forever.
The explosions occurred when many charity runners were nearing the finish line. This year more than 2,300 people officially ran Boston to raise money for more than 130 charities. In 2012 official charity runners raised about $17 million. Many of Boston's charity runners are vowing not to let the horrific events deter them from future Boston Marathons.
Many endurance fundraising program leaders spent the first hours following the explosions frantically locating participants and alumni of their events. Most are taking a close look at their own events to ensure that security is a priority and that participants are reassured.
Naturally, runners who had trained for Boston were disappointed that they could not cross the finish the line, but for many charity runners the race itself is a "bonus", shared Craig Comins of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America.
In any case, commented Craig, "We are a tough lot here in Boston and we will perservere. Next year's marathon will be quite a sight."
