November 2012

Greetings!

Cancellation of the New York City Marathon in the wake of Hurricane Sandy was big news for hundreds of endurance fundraising programs.

Many nonprofits creatively improvised ways to take care of and engage disappointed marathoners. Some, like members of Team World Vision, used their hands instead of their feet to help communities devastated by the storm.  Others ran symbolic courses to fulfill their obligations. Jeremy Goodman organized his own marathon in Connecticut to honor the many people who helped him raise more than $100,000 for the The Hole In The Wall Gang Camp.

The New York Times carried an Association of Fundraising Professionals prediction that two-thirds of runners would honor their charitable commitments. Brandon Wilmoth, with ALSAC/StJude Children's Research Hospital, was among those who told us that the cancellation was keeping many of its participants from meeting their fundraising goals. To compensate, St. Jude offered complimentary entries to their sold out Memphis Marathon Weekend to displaced NYC runners.

Still reeling from this unprecedented challenge, the New York Road Runners Club has yet to announce its 2013 charity program policies. Whatever they decide, it's sure to be a hot topic during the Endurance Summit at the 2013 Run Walk Ride Fundraising Council Conference

Use Storytelling To Take Your Thon to New Heights

Ten Tips for Effective Storytelling

Eventage EThe four most powerful words in the English language are "Once Upon A Time," according to Matt Glass, partner and chief creative officer of Eventage.

Glass shared Ten Tips for Effective Storytelling - including:

  • Differentiate your organization's story by being specific and sharing what makes your organization unique

Beyond Cash
What Else Should You Be Measuring?

Event360 v2
It's that time of year again - time to take stock of what worked and what didn't. While your event's most important goal is to raise money for your mission, it's not the only thing you should be measuring.

To plan for success in 2013, Event 360's Laurie Schaecher highlights some things you should be thinking about - beyond funds raised, including:
  • What percentage of your participants actually fundraise?
  • How many people are coming back to your event each year?
  • Did your marketing efforts bring in new people?
For all of the questions you should be asking, read the full blog post by clicking here: Who's Counting? - Metrics Beyond the Cash Drawer
