OUR OCTOBER SPONSOR

Our birthday is our own personal New Year. It is an annual reunion with ourselves - a periodic opportunity to take serious personal stock. It is the perfect time to check in with our deepest and best self to evaluate the past year and to project the next.

I usually retreat to some extent and fast to some degree for a period around my birthday, during which time I devote myself entirely to processing my impressions and my lessons, plotting my progress, pondering my problems, planning my goals. I see this introspective ritual as a way to sharpen my focus, realign my perspective and rededicate myself to living the very best life I can.

To that end, I always give myself a tarot reading. These birthday readings have proven to be an invaluable practice for me, one that I recommend highly for you. An Intuitive, transformational tarot reading for your birthday will give you precious insight on your path, your progress, your lessons, your desires, and your potential for the coming year.

Joining Mama Donna's Happy Birthday Tarot Club entitles you to a tarot reading during the month of your birth for only $120, which is a 1/3 discount off of the regular price of $180.

Readings are available in person or by phone from anywhere.

Reserve your October Birthday

That's just $120. plus paypal fee
for a new outlook on life.

 GOOD NEWS!

"What is so spectacular and amazing in my opinion about The Queen of My Self is that it gives this heretofore nebulous stage of life a name, a character, and - most of all - it captures its essence. This is the stage when a woman needs to be regal: she's bent over children for thirty years, and twenty or thirty years from now she'll be bending over a cane, but NOW she's standing tall and making her mark. She's the Queen of herself, or she can be."

As I read The Queen of My Self, you described and named so much of my new experience of myself. Once I could name it, I could finally claim it and allow myself to grow with the "me" I actually was, at 52, after a complete hysterectomy because of the ovarian cancer they found very early, after walking away from a career I had cultivated for almost 20 years, after finding that my spiritual journey has moved in a totally new and exciting direction, after recognizing a new strength and power in me. Up until reading your book, I just thought what I was experiencing was a bit of craziness/laziness and not really growth. Now that I see things differently, I feel myself stronger, more adventurous, more relaxed, more confident, more accepting of my choices and much happier. Now I'm very excited about where I am and where I'm heading. That is where your help came in. With great expectation,"

Hail Queens!

My apologies for skipping the September issue. I was on a much needed retreat, which I actually allowed myself to enjoy without any (or at least not too much) guilt.

While I do know that The Queen's Chronicles are widely enjoyed, because so many of you have written to tell me so, I am pretty sure that no one has suffered a deep depression for having missed a month!

Thanks so much for your non-complaining indulgence and ever-appreciated continuing support.

What to Do? Do SOMETHING!

The last issue began with these words:

"I am mad. So very mad. No, that doesn't begin to describe it. I am pissed. I am angry. I am irate. I am incensed.I am outraged. I am enraged. I am livid. I am GODDESS DAMN FURIOUS."

And you better believe that the ongoing onslaught of disregard, disrespect, abuse, violence, terror, rape, and murder perpetrated against girls, women and Mother Earth, Herself, tempts me to stay in a pissed-off state. But this same anger also cripples me and would prevent me from pursuing proactive methods of protest.

So I prefer to think of my anger as righteous indignation and let it fuel my determination to work toward the empowerment of women and inspire my involvement in causes pushing for social and gender justice.

And to my delight, I have been discovering legions of women everywhere who take on the troubling and terrifying threats of a world gone mad and are actively engaged in extremely courageous and creative activities which provoke thought, challenge oppression and produce real solutions.

This issues highlights some of these sheroes and celebrates the wonderful work they do. This is a huge topic and the number of incredible, effective women change-makers grows daily. Stay tuned for lots more of their inspiring stories in issues to come.

All hail these magnificent Queens!
Rising Into The Storm

Women Who Burst Open with Age

By Holly Smith-Berry

We women of a certain age - plump juicy raisins on the outside, sweet and sour grapes on the inside, occasionally awash in wine - can no longer be strangled by the twisted tentacles of the vineyard.

We are ascendant. Listen. You can hear the quickening of our individual voices forming a collective chorus - synchronized and buzzing - like cicadas loosed from their shells. Every seven or 17 years? No longer.
We're done with schedules, here for the duration and getting louder by the second.

It's not a trend or a wave - it's a life-force tsunami giving birth to an endless, sparkling curl. Our anthem: Be true to yourself, even if it means leaving and living alone. Risk it. Find your purpose. Live it. Shame is so yesterday. Secrets are cancer. Vulnerability heals us and the world.

Subversive thought bubbles have hovered over us for years, and now their fragile skins have turned to soap, thinning, reflecting the colorful prisms we yearn for.

We're clearing our throat chakras to release the buried treasure of all our chakras - root, sacral, hear, third eye, crown - bursting the levees of emotional plaque that kept us glued in place, strata upon strata. Until we got quiet and away, we had no idea how bound up we were.

Spiritual gingivitis makes our mouths bleed. First breaths after all that waiting can be fevered, even foul. But as we scrape and breathe fire, we realize that anger and politeness don't mix. We don't have that kind of time. And neither does the world.
I had a revelation in my thirties
that anger was not an art form. That thought freed me - my truth had to come out or I would choke on it. I was taught art was perfect and I wasn't. My perfectionism had been holding me back.

In my fifties I have a new revelation: Anger is art - imperfect in the making - the finger-painting of the crippled soul, the defiant spirit, the repressed rogue called mercifully (or mercilessly) to task. Anger and art are necessarily messy, best expressed in living color. Oh yeah, I see it blazing in red and orange, every shade of blue, white hot, gangrene green and mourning black.
 null

Creative tension has me wrestling with myself. To what end?
So I can keep my knees pressed together like a good girl and pin both shoulders of my shadow to the mat? (Not a winning strategy.)

Finally, I am learning to ease up and be kind when I feel her coming on; greet her like an old friend and see her for the juicy pomegranate that she is. Ask, listen, bite, quench. An answer always comes if I give the struggle an easement, a shoulder on the highway, an eddy.

So often we think we are not enough until we get a second opinion - or more credentials. With age we learn instead to seek counsel from our higher selves, The One that floats above us during Yoga practice, walking, praying, communing with nature, or loving with abandon.

It is then we rise like warm air no longer suppressed by the polar vortex. Winds shift. We breathe freely again, and deeply. The river flows, cleared of our old tires and rusted hulks.
Get out of my fucking way.

Here's to keeping company with the burgeoning squall of women who are stripping off their internalized wool suits, stiff shirts, silk nooses, control-top pantyhose, X-Acto-bladepumps - all those assimilating fashions - and obliterating their plaque.
It's high time. Time for southern air to meet True North and send our separate thought bubbles skyward like hot air balloons so they can organize into a towering thunderhead - powered by fire and ready to reign.
Holocaust Heroes: Fierce Females

The 4 B's: BULLY, BULLIED, BYSTANDER and BRAVE UPSTANDER are described by artist Linda Stein and others with this question, "What does it take to be a brave upstander"?
Black Mamba Anti Poaching Unit

The Black Mamba APU was founded in 2013 to protect the Olifants West Region of Balule Nature Reserve and has since expanded to cover the entire Balule area, 400 square kilometers.

The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit is the first of its kind, being that the majority of the teams are women. Currently there are 26 Black Mambas and a further 23 armed guards that operate within Balule and along its boundaries.

Anti-poaching is a major need in the area and they are constantly plagued by rhino and bush-meat poachers. Apart from antelopes, other endangered species such as wild dogs and cheetah are also sadly the victims of snaring.

The women cover more than 20 km a day on foot. They have discovered and removed more than 1000 snares and have effected a 76% reduction in poaching.

This year they received the highest United Nations Environmental Award for their extraordinary efforts to save endangered animals.

The Queen's Court is a gathering of sovereign women of a certain age - our dear peers - who graciously offer information, guidance, inspiration and encouragement to each other.

We Queens know what we know. And we know a great deal. Our experience has made us wise. So, feel free to consult with our cyber council/counsel when you are need of sage advice or wish to explore a particular topic of interest.

Are you angry?
How angry are you?
What makes you angry?
How do you handle it?
How do you express it?
How does it make you feel?

Here are two letters from Queen readers that offer very different responses to the questions about anger.

Anger....The Lava of My Soul/Volcano of My Outer Vessel.
I read how you feel with regards to your anger and what is going on in the world and feel the exact way you do even as painful and enraged I become when watching the news or reading..I know that I must because I have to be aware of what is happening even though it's upsetting and it does affect me in a very real, long and lasting way. I too have just had it with how our gender of women or being a female already puts a bulls eye target on your back. That we are trafficked, sexually assaulted, molested, used against our own will, beaten down physically and verbally by people, the media, magazines, our own government and sometimes I forget that I'm in a free country and feel more that I'm being held hostage because of how our rights as a woman are being hijacked and once again we are being discriminated or put down because we want to take control of our health, well being, sexual health....and that is wrong or not ladylike.

I am infuriated that I have to live by a neighbor who hates and abuses females and continues to target me and my family and has his family joining in with them although the cops have been called, multiple times he has gotten in trouble....he is free and rapes the American Flag as it waves in the front of the house they reside in and he made sure to put that up. He always tries to belittle or intimidate and doesn't like that the women of this household do not submit to him or give in to his fear or controlling ways. I have to often remind  myself I'm in the USA but as we know freedom doesn't really mean freedom....it comes with it's own set of being in a state of imprisonment.

What else has me boiling...oh Isis. As they continue to behead the innocent, rape young girls repeatedly in celebration or sell them off, destroy history, ruin the homelands of the innocent as they have to live in fear and become a refugee. I feel like I have all this lava that wants to burst from me and I haven't been able to express it. I have before by boxing or punching something...screaming, sobbing....being angry at everyone including God, Goddess, angels...everything because I see injustice has taken up permanent residence in our lives but I also know that there is  Yin/Yang to everything but even in knowing there are those fighting these battles and helping through means of prayer, advocacy, putting their own lives on the line....I have a right to be angry and that is what infuriates me...how women are somehow expected not to explode or we are a bitch or crazy...or the best one are you getting your period.....(as I've gotten plenty of times..)

Because I'm a woman and I get mad and speak up that makes me somehow belong locked away in a psych ward somewhere.....we still have these lies implanted into our brains that poison our souls and thinking on a mass level. I'm not sure as of why when I get angry...I really get riled up and scream because I feel I am every one of those women, or child, or the person who gets killed for being gay or transgendered. I feel these things...and no one gets why I have to be so hyper sensitive or care so much...and that pisses me off too. I'm not allowed to "care" about my fellow man, woman or child because that's their issue...sorry it's OUR issue.

It seems that certain people I know are so focused on such petty things (and yes, sure I'm being judge-mental here and I feel have to apologize but I'm not...) like, "What bar can we go to tonight...." or "I have to get my nails done or a waxing..." Hey, that's fine to enjoy and celebrate your life while investing in self-care but some seem so focused on their own world they forget there is another world. Does anyone like to see or read these horrifying accounts...NO! But for me I thirst for knowledge, I must know, I need to know what I feel is vital because I can't turn my back or remain quiet. I'd rather die for my beliefs or be tortured than not give a damn at all.

I'm not sure what I'm trying to get across but it seems we are expected to behave a certain way because of a specified gender and for us to keep our mouths sewn (gag, those crazy women...) look gorgeous, be submissive and take the blame for everything like when our husband or a lover cheats on us or perhaps lays a hand on us....Yep, it's all our fault....(I call this the False Eve Syndrome...) Let's take responsibility for everything and bear the weight of others yet be entitled to no rights...sounds about right, doesn't it? Keep women on chains because they know how powerful we are and that is what paralyzes so many with fear. Because when we get together or do something....things do get done even when subjected to forms of sexism, abuse, lies, etc.

I am woman....hear me roar!!! We are lioness of God...the strength Card in the Tarot gets that across as does the Archangel Ariel meaning Lioness of God who is often though of female...if we weren't expected to me strong or make a roar why are we referred to Mama Bear or when a person says, "Whoa, your Mama Bear side really came out..." Yes, because our strength is a force to be reckoned with. What can we do...what more can we do to help out our fellow sisters and brothers who know all too well the bondage of inequality?

- Nancy, ?

I hear you sister!
I have a totally different approach though. My thoughts- if we truly create with our thoughts, I prefer to think about beauty, unconditional love, acceptance of each other, forgiveness. To find the spark within each person that is the purest essence of love. I don't watch the news as I would certainly fuel the hurt and anger in the world if I did. That doesn't mean I sit idly by while my rights are taken away. I don't know how I am so aware of things happening in the world- some of it is people telling me things- the rest is an inner knowing. I will peacefully do what my heart says is right and good in all situations. I visualize harmony, a healthy Mother Earth and people coming to their senses and beginning to live "right".

If I didn't live this way I think I would explode- maybe implode? It would definitely create a lot more stress in my life and we all know that stress leads to dis-ease.

- Nancy, NC

Letters in response to the JULY/AUGUST 2015 Issue:

Way to go, Donna! (I'm mad, too!) Thanks for lighting this candle of ire today. A lot of us share it. We need a bonfire.
- Jenny, NY

HOOOO  RA.....SACRED ROAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Karen, CA

I'm so happy there's someone else out there who's "mad as hell" at what's happening in the world.  I'm afraid the Republicans and the Religious Right are going to turn America into another 3rd World country. I'm hoping I don't live long enough to see it but I worry about the future for my son and his children. I've tried really hard to stay optimistic that things will surely turn around and logic will prevail but every time I pick up a newspaper or listen to the news on TV I'm reminded that for every step forward there seems to be another one backward. I've had to dump any thoughts I have about the world's problems for the sake of my own sanity and mental health. But I keep hoping.....
- Linda, FL

Whew!!! Great column!! You rock, Donna!!

Donna, good for you! Brava! I have long thought righteous anger is powerful. Gloria is right. Give 'em hell!

And we are glad to so. It is a joy and a privilege to share in the fortune of another woman. I recently heard Oprah say the saddest thing ever - "The hardest thing about being successful is having someone to be glad for you."

It takes a centered and confident Queen to break that pattern. There are 60 million thrones out there. One for each of us. There is plenty of purpose, passion and power for us all. May we use it well!

Prayer requests:
My mother had a big shock- her partner Herman Ober passed away last week and it has caused her to go into a state of disorientation- having a bad heart is adding to the challenge. please put her in your prayers -especially that she feel safe and supported- remember she is 97! And as her daughter, I have to say that it still is a challenge to remain calm watching your adult parent suffer- no matter how old she is. Thank you all,
Barbara, NY

Today I am Celebrating 6 Months since last breast cancer surgery! I am feeling great, I have never felt better. Thank you all for your love, prayers and healing energy.

I just started 1st round of chemo - for a localized tumor. 5 more to go - speed out. I'm feeling ok - tired but in good sports. Natural nutrients, visualizations& friends are helping. For anyone so inclined, please pray the meds will do the full job.

If someone listens, or stretches out a hand,
or whispers a kind word of encouragement,
extraordinary things begin to happen.
