"I learned from you that not only do I have gold, but I am also gold. What does that mean? It means that at last I appreciate my own value, and that I have value regardless of what the world reflects back to me. When I stand for my own value, I insist that my interactions express that, and always I am rewarded. Thanks so much for reflecting that to me long enough for me to connect to it."

Have a Love Affair With Your Self
|
|
|
Hail Queens!
We have been sold a Hollywood bill of goods when it comes to romance. You know, how the handsome and suave leading man always knows exactly what to say - just the right things at the right time in the right tone - to make his lady love swoon. Well, the truth is that someone directs this Prince Charming incarnate. And someone - often a woman - writes his lines for him. Lines she, no doubt, would love to hear. Wouldn't we all? What is more passionately romantic than a lover gazing deep into your eyes and reading the feelings and desires of your true being? This is the fantasy of an ideal lover who knows the truths of your soul and who knows exactly how to satisfy you in every way. Unfortunately, most of us are not mind readers. It is so important to be able to ask for what we want rather than challenge our lover to intuit our feelings. Expecting someone else to know instinctively what we desire and what we need at any moment is very unfair to both parties and doomed to disappoint. It is our job to know what we want and what we like, and it is completely up to us to articulate our needs in such a way as to give them every chance of being met. When I consult with the couples whose weddings I will officiate, I always urge them to include in their vows not only what they promise to bring to each other and the marriage, but also to ask for what they want to receive. Taking the responsibility for our own happiness and fulfillment is a great gift to give a lover who, presumably, wants to please and satisfy us - or else why would we want to be with him/her anyway? All those perfect words of comfort and devotion that we long to hear? We can say them to ourselves. Say them with feeling and meaning. We can show ourselves the attention and affection that we all crave - that we lavish on others, but never think to give to ourselves. There is only one person in the world who is guaranteed to stay by our side until the day we die and that is our Self. So we better learn how to understand, nurture, love, honor and cherish her so that we may know how to cherish and be cherished by another with no guessing games and no pressure. Our primary love relationship has to be with ourselves. Someone once said, "In order to say 'I love you,' you have to be able to say 'I.'" Exercising Self-appreciation and affection is not meant to seal ourselves off from others, or to replace any current or future love relationships, but to make sure that we do not get involved for the wrong reasons - out of loneliness or fear or desperation. When we take the time know our Self intimately and embrace all the parts of our being - body, mind, heart and spirit - wholeheartedly, unconditionally, with compassion and no judgment attached, we can be a sovereign lover, not dependent and not beholden. And then when and if we choose, we are able to share that love with someone special who will understand how very precious it is and return it in kind. Do we deserve any less?
With best blessings of glorious Self-love,

A Poem About Self-Love
After Octavio Paz
after chopping off all the arms that reached out to me;
after boarding up all the windows and doors;
after filling all the pits with poisoned water;
after building my house on the rock of no,
inaccessible to flattery and fear;
after cutting off my tongue and eating it;
after hurling handfuls of silence
and monosyllable of scorn at my loves;
after forgetting my name;
and the name of my birthplace;
and the name of my race;
after judging and sentencing myself
to perpetual waiting,
and perpetual loneliness, I heard
against the stones of my dungeon of syllogisms,
the humid, tender, insistent
onset of spring.
Of course, we can only find love once we love ourselves, so to me whether you are partnered or not, Self-love is the most worthy of causes. This poem poignantly describes my journey through Perimenopause for the last 10 years, as my demons have been thrust face-to-face with me, forcing me to tenderly start learning to love myself. It paints in blunt detail that which I didn't dare to see before now, the hurts caused to myself and others by my own lack of self-love. With this awareness has come great tenderness and compassion for myself and my loved ones, for all those hurts we inflict on each other, many of them unwittingly. So if you've ever been told and bought into the story that Self-love is a selfish pursuit, this poem should set things straight. So much of the hurt in the world is unconsciously caused by the absence of self-love.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to The Queen's Chronicles. It is a joy to connect with you and to share your comments with our sister Queens.
Please keep your letters coming. And do feel free to make suggestions about content you would like to see. Or anything else, for that matter.
Letters In Response to the JANUARY 2014 Issue: Thank you so very much for sharing the information of the many great women who came before us. I do not plan to go into "battle", but I do plan to once again speak out more frequently and more effectively. - Elayne, PA I awoke longing for friendship and community. On impulse, I clicked your "Rebel Queens" newsletter email and stepped inside a place where I truly belong, a community that supports my thinking and creative energy. Many thanks for blessings this day. Many blessings, - Patt, TX This is just what I needed to read this morning. Thank you! STAY STRONG! Peace & Love, - Linda, NY Rebellious Queens! Right on! We need more of those today! - Cynthia. AK You are always an inspiration. I was just mentioning you in ritual today in Cairo. - Dalia, Egypt I always appreciate your uplifting messages and newsletters, thanks for all the great things that you do, Mama Donna! - Lorraine, France You did it again, Oh Queen! - Shay, CA I really loved this issue! - Amber, NY Letters In Response to the Queen's appearance on ROCK THE CHANGE: Thank you Queen Mama Donna. I listened to your interview today and you were amazing medicine for my heart. Thank you for your fascinating insights into Queendom! I absolutely agree with you and am hosting Shamanic Goddess events in London for women who want to step into their authenticity and power. Namaste, - Chrissy, England Thank you for letting me know about Rock the Change. So far lots of very useful information and it nice to know I'm not alone. Please send me the Affirmation. P.S. I completed my Adult Bat Mitzvah April 2012, and am currently planning a vacation to Hawaii to learn to surf, to relax and to enjoy myself. - Elsbeth, NY Thank you for your presentation and thank you for your gifts. I am grateful! - Sarah, Italy Hello! It was wonderful to hear you speak at Rock the Change, I feel empowered! Thank you! And I'd love to receive your affirmation. Love to you, - Marie-Louise, Holland Listening to your conference with Mee, I felt strongly the urge to write to you. I coach and teach in the French community the same ideas about midlife and menopause. It was inspiring to listen to you. Thank you. - Rita, Quebec, Canada Your Majesty, Thank you so much for defining this new age of womanhood. I, too, have been struggling to find my place now that I am 52 and very much alive. With gratitude, - Nancy, CT I love the Queen! The archetype resonated with me, like finding a missing piece of the puzzle. As a once married, now single, childless-by-choice 41-year old, I am realizing that there is no established fit for women like myself. I suspect there are a lot of 40-something Queen aspirants out there, either people like me or those that married very young, divorced, and whose children are now grown. Anyway, thanks for sharing your insight about the Queen! - - Lisa, FL - After being surgically menopaused at 38, I've wondered what the heck I'm supposed to be, because it sure ain't a Crone yet. Thanks for giving me new language for my new self! - Kelley, TN I wanted to thank you for your Queen of My Self presentation. I'm not in the Queen phase of my life yet. But will be in a few years. What you wrote hit a deep note of truth within me. - Jessica, SC
Your letters will be printed in the next Queen's Chronicles.

And we are glad to so. It is a joy and a privilege to share in the fortune of another woman. I recently heard Oprah say the saddest thing ever - "The hardest thing about being successful is having someone to be glad for you."
It takes a centered and confident Queen to break that pattern. There are 60 million thrones out there. One for each of us. There is plenty of purpose, passion and power for us all. May we use it well!

Lynne Stewart, NY,
"the people's lawyer," on her release from federal prison.
Lynne Stewart and I worked together at a public school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the late 1960's. I was the art teacher and she was the librarian. We were also in the same consciousness-raising group, a revolutionary and empowering life-changing experience.
We were both ardent feminists and anti Viet Nam War agitators. We marched together for legal abortions and civil rights. And we worked together in the school organizing teachers and parents to change the misogynistic and racist policies of our Neanderthal principal.
Lynne went on to become a well-known and respected lawyer dedicated to representing controversial, poor, and often unpopular defendants, as well as defending the civil rights and liberties of all citizens. Her latest (and last) client was Sheik Abdel-Rahman.
In November 2003 Lynne was indicted on charges of obstruction of justice and conspiracy to provide material support to terrorism. She was convicted on these charges, though they were trumped up in the paranoiac aftermath of 9/11.
Her conviction meant automatic disbarment and a sentence of 28 months, which she served. Then in 2010 she was re-sentenced to 10 years in Fedfrom Federal Prison in Texas. She served four of those years and got ill.
When it became known that Lynne has stage four cancer with a dismal prognosis, there was a worldwide outcry demanding her release on compassionate grounds. This effort, spearheaded by her husband, Ralph, and joined by Dick Gregory, Desmond Tutu and Madonna, finally resulted in her release this December.
Queen Lynne is now back home with her family and receiving much needed medical care. Long live the Queen!
